OK I've been in touch with Backdraft to book the car in for a Helix 6 PUK clutch, lightened (6.5KG/14lb) flywheel and fitting of my Peloquin diff for early November before it gets carted back to Bill for some IE forged rods for peace of mind :)

I was tempted to push my luck with the VR6/G60 clutch/flywheel setup though I'm not convinced it will stand up to the torque delivery and I don't want to have to fit another one 6 months down the line if it did start slipping :(

Also looks as if JBS will shortly have their new manifolds in stock so I can send my old one back for a straight-swap. Good job I decided not to wait for it to become available before finishing the build! (not that I'm likely to fit it now anyway, pending how well the INA mani holds up)

Well, on Wednesday I went over to Backdraft to drop the car into Alex for the Helix clutch, lightened flywheel and Peloquin diff which he had fitted by Friday :D

Upon taking the gearbox out he found that one of the bearings on the output shaft to 5th (IIRC) had disintegrated so this put things back a day while waiting for a new one, but other than this it all appeared to go smoothly so big thanks to Alex for his work here :) It was also great to see his car close up - very very impressive!

So, my journey home was the first time I was actually able to see what the car now had to offer, though still not to it's full potential as it was absolutely hammering it down with rain :(

Even so, it was a massive difference over what I was used to before and definitely put some big grins on my face :D I absolutely love the quick spool and aggression of this particular turbo, though after seeing Alex's sat in the workshop a small voice in my mind does question whether I should have gone BT. Still, the more you have the more you want I guess and you certainly can't argue with the instant punch of torque the hybrid gives, and holds all the way to the redline :) I'm also very impressed with the Helix paddle clutch which feels very OE - not on/off at all which I was somewhat expecting. The LSD is also definitely helping putting the power down but driving in the wet it'll still happily spin up and try to pull you across the road if you don't modulate the throttle. The fun of FWD...

As the wishbone needed moving in order to remove the gearbox I later took the car into a local garage for a full alignment check, which showed everything to be within 1/10th of a mm of where it was set last time - but the steering still felt off. Upon closer inspection it was found that my Vibratechnics rear wishbone bush has dislodged itself upwards slightly, probably accounting for the questionable handling.

As luck would have it the car was due to be dropped back over to Bill yesterday, who says he has seen these bushes move before and hence normally tack welds them into place once pressed in which is what I've now asked him to do with mine. Bill's now got the car for the next 2-3 weeks while he beads my intercooler pipework and fits a nice set of forged IE rods for peace of mind with all this torque.

Once these are fitted he can then see whether the turbo has anything more to give, so watch this space :) Then, (hopefully) the car will be near enough "finished" and ready to start enjoying properly next year with some track days and shows.

That's great that you almost have it totally finished so you can enjoy it! Bit crap that winter is here though! Are you keeping it off the road or just going for it?

Any power/torque readings so far?

We need some videos!! :D

:) I'll try and get a couple when it comes back - will be good to see for myself what it sounds like outside of the car too.

Forgot to mention what an awesome noise the dump valve now also makes on lift-off, it's addictive. The exhaust makes more of a drone than before if you hold it at 70/80 but nothing too loud so all good.

I have another car to use as a daily runaround so I'll be using the Cupra as an evening/weekend and track toy :)

No official figures so far but Bill logged a maximum MAF reading of 227 g/s when mapping it, which equates to roughly 284 BHP (factor of 1.25) and with 8.25 degrees of ignition advance with the WMI this should also account for another 15-20 BHP on top so I'm potentially knocking on the door of 300 BHP :)

All sounds good robbie, get it back and ill pop over say hi with mine

Definitely mate sounds good :)

I woulda just pulled the driveshaftt cup off instead of moving the wishbone, you gotta drop the fluid anyway.

Diff is amazing isnt it? :D

:)

To be honest it's difficult for me to comment too much on the LSD yet as I was never able drive mine hard on the standard diff with the new turbo whilst the clutch was slipping so badly to appreciate how much worse the torque steer might have really been. As I've only driven it back in the rain I won't be able to fully appreciate the difference until we get a dry day, though I look forward to it :)

Wishbone isnt removed, but as you say, the cup is removed.

Was nice to work on Robbie's car. People did get confused when it was parked next to mine! ;)

:D Nice to see them compared side-by-side like that

Out of interest Bill - would OE rods generally show any signs of stress/fatigue if they were about to bend or can they simply give at any time?

they would go at any time..
occasionally I have seen pictures (not it 1st hand yet) of a bent rod coming out, which was bent just about 50mm down from the piston..

usually catstrophic poling out of block failures when they go

you pave the way with these for BT power levels

:) You'll love it mate, very nice OE pedal feel and puts the power down nicely
