advice needed - 1.8t gearbox

I have a mk4 1.8t golf, my car started knocking a while ago and has got progressively worse. at first i thought it could have been the bottom end as it sounded like an engine knock. but after discovering it only happens in first gear its obviously transmission related. I took the car to my local mechanic and he seems to think the same thing he said something has gone wrong in the box on the first gear possibly the bearings or a loose tooth? anyway it has now got even louder and the gears wine like mad in first gear and also when the car is stationary in neutral :s

I am looking to change to gearbox asap and have been offered a gearbox from a seat leon cupra - r (225). will this be ok to fit as its a 6 speed box...will i need to change the gear linkeage and what gains will i get from a 6 speed box as opposed to the standard 5 speed?

My car is currently running 299.3bhp, so if by putting a diesel gearbox in would be an even better option i could do this as it would also be a performance upgrade aswel as solving a problem. oh i forgot to mention i also ahve the g60 flywheel and vr6 clutch!

If you fit a Diesel gearbox how do you think it'll be a performance increase? It's got longer gearing!

6 speed will fit OK, just change the relevant bits (mounts etc) - but for simplicity I'd just pick up a replacement 02J

well ive been offered it for 300 inc fitting! so if its going to work it will be a stronger box as its from the 225 cupra r. and hopefully it should be a bit more torquey because of the smaller gear ratios? am i right in thinking this

when i bought my mk3 cupra it had a terrible knocking in first gear, had the box reconditioned and the first gear cog had about 4/5 teeth missing !!!

i cant find the gearbox code can anyone tell me if i can fit a audi tt gearbox in my cupra r? or what gearbox would fit as its very hard to find one. thanks
