Cupra Misfire

Hi,

I have done a search on the misfires people have experienced with their TFSI engines.

My Cupra has misfired at tick over since I got it back in April. It had 16k on it when I got it and now has 21k.

I serviced it on Saturday past and fitted new plugs (genuine OEM SEAT parts). After changing the plugs, for a few minutes the misfires were gone but after a short period they returned

Would it help to fit new Coils? or do all you guys TFSIs misfire at tickover.

you could change the coil packs, not sure if would make much diference. These engines naturally misfire reguarly even from the factory. how do you know its misfiring. do you have vag-com?

Thanks for the reply mate,

No I don't have VAG Com, you can feel the engine shake slightly and hear the misfire through the exhaust at idle.

It follows a regular pattern, i.e. once every so many seconds.

Thanks for reassuring me mate, was thinking my car was busted. I might just price up a set of coils and if they are under £100 all in I think I will get them to be sure.

robdf2,

I've read all your other threads and posts regarding the issues you have had lol.

I am going to just live with it, and if anyone asks about the misfire, I'm going to say in my best italian classic ferrari owners accent 'iz a characteristic of the car' lol.

Mines misfiring on cylinder two and 3 and the ecu also logged a misfire on a cylinder but couldnt detect which one. Car runs really rough, not allowing me to go over 1500rpm etc. Took it in when it was shaking like mad and the SEAT techs saw it and commented that it might be a coil pack. Gone back today and they said they cleared the ecu and uploaded the ecu update and its fine since. Explained to them that I have myself cleared the ecu before and it ran fine for about two days but then after it gets progressively worse and more frequent as time goes on. Me and the SEAT dealer have agreed that I run the car with the software update and see how I get on, and when the faults return I shall take it back to the garage.

Are you mapped and running a TBE?

MMmmm Ive got those two fault codes along with quite a few more. Was your std exhaust blowing at all?

Hmm thats interesting about the exhaust, as mine has started to sound different lately, dont know if its blowing or not. Not looked at it yet. Where do they start to blow at? Backbox?

I took my coils out last night and sprayed them with copious amonuts of Electrical Contact Cleaner and attacked the insides with cotton buds and this stuff. Worked a charm and now (touches a lot of wood) the car has no or the very odd missfire. Some crap came off the coils lol. Went through about 6 cotton buds each coil

I had probems with water in the bores also, so I used the wet/dry hoover to suck that all out also, and knocked up a cover to help stop water getting in again. I will post pictures of this later as photobucket is blocked on my works computer.

I made it using some gloss black acrylic with a red CUPRA sticker in the middle.

Poverty,

Hope you get her sorted mate, I

Back from the dead
Noticed at tick over my car has started to feel a bit... well shuddery.

Rev counter doesn't indicate this, but I had a mate in the car the other day who said he could feel it at idle.

Add to that a sensation of surging when accelerating from slow speeds (almost overboosting), and then quite flat acceleration (intermittent) from high speeds (like it can't build boost), and it adds to a less than 100% overall driving experience.

Off to Storm Developments today to get it VAGCOM'd, but I have a slightly bigger worry in the fact that the wastegate has started to sound like its chattering.

Car doesn't feel slow as such, just less than smooth as it used to. New DV 2 months ago, and plugs changed for NGK Iridiums a year or so ago. Be interested to see if it is coilpacks as supposedly the Iridium plugs put less strain on the coil packs. Always a lottery until you get some DTC's when guessing!

Getting a bit bored of turbo'd lumps, always feels like you're fighting a losing battle trying to keep them sweet.

Wonder if Evo drivers suffer similarly.

warren,

I know what you mean mate, thats how my car was, you could feel the thing shuddering every so often when at idle. I too had no DTCs when scanned with my mates diagnostic machine. Since I cleaned the coils it has gone (for now).

If it returns, I will be definatley getting new coils.

A few of my mates have Evo's a 5, a 6 and an 8 FQ 340 MR, they ALL have idling issues also and the 5 was overboosting a lot recently due to a faulty actuator on the turbo.

To me it seems all turbo lumps are compromised to some extent.

The random/multiple cylinder misfire code always comes as as part of a misfire detection.

Only on serious misfires will a fault code and Engine light appear.
