anything form 400-600. I got 600 whilst purposefully driving sensibly. Down to 400 at the moment maybe less as iv'e been doing alot of rushing about the place on b roads with lots of overtakes and sharp corners to navigate. The joys of tdi :p

Even better have one of each, 16v and TDi what more can you ask for in life

220ish with mostly town driving.
Reads about 25-30 on the computer round town and about 35-38 on the motorway or A roads which I think is reasonably accurate.
My ultra modern and fuel efficient mk5 reads about 22 and 29 respectively!!!

right, going to bring this back to life...

my 16v on the motorway once hit 43 mpg and at the moment i am driving very slow and steady and on my 22 round mile trip to work i am seeing about 31 / 33 mpg and am saving about £10 a week by driving this way. The misees gti 8v on the other hand will not go above 27 mpg. Now i am guessing this is becuase her trip to work is a 4 mile round trip and the car doesnt get chance to warm up and get going properly. When she does take it on a run though it drinks the fuel and stil shows 27 mpg. Now i have been driving the 8v this week and so far have it up to 29.8 mpg.....any suggestions on how to get it back up to the high 30's. Does the mileage on the car make a difference ?

Does your temp gauge come up to normal temp?
Maybe the car is stuck in cold start and needs a thermostat change?
Didn't you have an eco-tec on there? Could that be making a difference
Running 2psi in your tyres?

On a different note I had a puncture and had to run my space saver - driving a steady speed home took 3 mins extra but I got 47MPG WOW!

hurrrmmm, good shout. The tires have metal valve caps that will not budge on them so maybe they could use some air.

It did have a boost valve (yes yes i know) but its gone now.

Get a mole grip or something on them and give them a good turn!
People I knew with 8v's have told me they can get around 35mpg without really having to drive miss daisy

I would check for vacume hose leaks as well, these can have a big effect on MPG as can a dirty throttle body so give those a good check.

Failing that bring it to the next meet and we'll have an 8v comparison session as driving like a posessed lunatic on my 20 mile drive to work still see's 35mpg.

Final thing is the boost valve may have confused the primitive ECU so you could always disconnect the battery for 30 mins which would send it back to default.

some big numbers there, must be something seriosuly wrong with mines.

reads around 20 mpg when driving normally, goes down to about 6 or 7 when im driving like a headcase :( :(

tenner petrol gets me about 20 - 25 miles depending on my driving...

I know i need a new cat converter and lambda sensor which im getting this week,

hopefully it brings it up near close to some of the numbers you guys have posted lol.

ano m8,

having second thoughts about the car now, ive already a cat and lambda ordered for it,

got cat for a ridiciously low price but have already put a fortune into the car already.

Ive had a read about the forum and it mentions cleaning the throttle body with car cleaner and a toothbrush, but cant find any specific instructions.

Dont wana sound daft but dont really know much about car mechanics lol. Computers more my thing lol, but where is the throttle body?

Is it under the wee black box where the air intakehoses from the filter go into the engine?

gonna give a go here to see if makes any difference

regards

Follow the pipe out of the airbox to the top of the engine, your at the throttle body. Disconnect the pipe at this end (jubillee clip) and then set about cleaning the valve you've just revealed. If you jam the throttle it'll stay open.

A buggered cat and lambda will seriously hamper MPG though so i'm not surprised at those figures. I know a guy whose cat went on a 1.3 fiesta, wouldn't rev beyond 3k and used a full tank of juice in 100 miles

Cheers mate,

found it and cleaned it out, also discovered a tear in one of the hoses and it was fulla gunk 2.

will not know any difference untill i get the new cat and lambda fitted, mite aswell go ahead and put a new back box on aswell, i replaced middle exhaust not even a month ago so just makes sense lol..

Will post results when i have them.

cheers!

I'm 24 so not too old. Mine does so well because it low mileage, fully serviced up and mainly because i do mines of A roads a day so it gets to stretch its legs away from town traffic.

If i were to stick a tenner in and go out with the boys i doubt i'd get beyond 50 miles.

Hose full of gunk will be a breather pipe, replace it and you'll get another slight increase in MPG.

Should be quite easy to do i got one for a few quid.
