air intake pipe came off

I was driving the leon quite hard yesterday, when all of a sudden there was a loud bang and the car started donkey hopping and spluttering. I shat my pants and thought the engine was wrecked, but I looked under the bonnet and the intake pipe had come off the throttle body end of the air intake system. The pipe looks like its been doctored on to the car. even the jubilee clips holding it in place were f*cked.
The guy I bought the car from a few weeks ago claimed it was serviced regularly and it has the stamps in the book. How could a reputable garage a/ not notice or b/would have done that themselves. I know some people just get local cowboys to service it and then get the stamp from somewhere else!
Needless to say I ordered a new one from the local SEAT dealer to the tune of £70 but now I'm terrified of doing it again before it comes and ruining the engine.

I took my car twice to a big offical dealer and they failed to diagnose a split TIP
But a smaller and more specialist dealer got it no problem, just depends on who worked on it and if they noticed/ looked for it

I'd be surprised if the pipe had been doctored, I can't think of a good reason to.

Was there something wrong with the pipe that made you think you needed a new one? (rather than just put decent clips on it)

I had this happen to me once when I forgot to do it back up after cleaning my TB, it does go bloody bang when the boost comes in!

I wonder how come you can still drive with it off, the FPR must just allow enough fuel in with the air coming into the TB naturally.

Is that a stupid statement? Does the engine running create enough of a vacume to suck air in anyway from the engine bay?

thanks for the replies, I did get the pipe back on and as tight as i could.
The reason I know its been doctored is that you can see that the end with the jubilee clip has been trimmed down which suggests it has split at the end and also it the MAF end has been bonded and gaffer tapped because of another split.
Also the jubilee clips had been cut and another one attached, so there are 2 connected together!! Not sure why when you can go and buy new ones for pennys?

At £70 for air intake, you may as well go for a silicon one surely?

yeah I asked at Halfords about the full induction kit and it only costs £14 more so I might as well do that I think

just read his profile; its a non turbo 1.8.. this all makes more sense now! surely there is no pressure to pop the intake hose off? have you got any pictures of the pipe you are reffering to?

yeah I'll try and post a pic tomorrow. The replacement air intake pipe cost £71 and the K&N induction kit cost £85!!!
After looking at the pics of the K&N kit you still need the original pipe as part of the fitting. So I had to buy the new one anyway. If I had thought I could have laid the old pipe next to the new one so you could see what I meant, but i've fitted the new one straight in today, and I can't be arsed to take it all out again as this isn't the weather to be stuck under the bonnet of a car.
More the weather to be driving it.
P.s. The reason it seems the pipe came off is because it had been trimmed down where I assume it had split before, this meant it couldn't sit on the end of the TB properly even with the sh*tty jubilee clips as tight as poss, and after a couple of good revs of the engine it just slipped off. Plus when I had a good look at it today it had several other splits in it too.

i had a problem with my intake pipe where the breather pipe got savaged and tore apart from the intake pipe, looking for a new 1, is the dealership the best option to find one??? cheers

As with all air pipe work i would recommend replacing it with uprated stuff.
When my TIP failed the car was still under warranty but had it not been they are about 100 quid, and crap.
May as well just buy a forge or ths one and fit and forget, much better quality

yea ive decided to go for a forge pipe its costing me about £130,found it on the forge website, but it should last much longer than the standard, plus it looks much better aswell!!
