cold starting is fine but warm/hot starting is not?

If this is the case you MAY have a faulty engine temp sensor (not the coolant temp needle on the dash) the engine has a number of temp sensors.

I don't know how old you are but if you remember cars having a choke knob, your electronic choke knob is stuck in the on position. :D

And i'm only 18 so haven't a clue about chokes ha!

Sorry about the flippant postings - I assumed that your car was a 1.2 - but a 1.4, that IS serious as my wife has a 1.4 engine in her Polo! I'd still start with the temperature sensor, as implied in a previous reply, the gauge reading is not what the engine management system looks at.

And when your dad buys VAG-COM he can look and see what temperatures these sensors are claiming to see!! (early father's day present!)

Looks like its your temp sensor is faulty (fault code 16502). Replace this and all your problems should go away!.

The EGR valve shouldnt affect the starting of the car, but may affect its running performance if it is faulty. When youve fixed the temp sensor try reseting the codes, and see if the EGR code comes back as it may just have been a glitch.

Hi, just remember to post back on what has happened, remember to buy a new O-ring seal and retaining clip for the coolant sensor. If your sensor is black then it is the original one, they are green now! The EGR code could end up being due to that valve and its pipework needing cleaned out of soot etc. My wife's Polo is a 52 reg 2003MY with a BBY engine so maybe its EGR system will need cleaning out soon!
