i had a K&N induction kit on my previous car {scoob} and liked the sound it made does this engine have the same sucking sound when a 57i is fitted or does it have that deep induction note, or since its completely standard should i just go for a panel filter:confused:

any help would be greatfull:)

The oil ruining your MAF is a red herring.

I have run a K&N for the last two years and 25K miles. Tonight, I took it out to have a look at the MAF and there is no sign of oil and the car _still_ runs a treat.

IMHO, if you over-oil, when cleaning it, you may suffer a small period of iffy behaviour, but in general don't worry about it.

Think about it, if it really was a problem, K&N would have gone out of business a long time ago....

There is plenty of info on this site about which one to go for.

Yeah I think it only confuses the MAF when you put too much oil on it.

The way I see it is if you want bling under your bonnet and don't mind a big price tag then go for the induction kit. If you want similar performance and sound of an induction kit for a fraction of the price and OEM look then go for panel filter with a bigger air feed to a smoothed/drilled airbox.

I have gone for the latter option and very pleased with it. :)

I had a K&N induction filter it was over-oiled when I unwrapped it.

4000-5000 miles with it on MAF dies.

Could be a cowinsadence but my car has not even reached 15000 yet

Ive fitted 57i's to the past three cars ive had, and never had any MAF related problems. :)
Even if you did get an over oiled one, its not too much of a ball ache to clean the MAF...
For the price, i dont think you can go wrong either. (£80 off ebay)
And its red and shiny.... oooooh pretty!

my lcr was gained 10bhp when i fitted one on the rollers, makes a nise sucking sound when lcr comes on boost, i swear by K&n others will tell you diffrent !! up to you..
as for noise remove the bonnet sound proofing and fit a 007 forge dv and the k&n your on to a winner im real happy with the sound of mine... removing bonnet insulation made about 20% louder in my case and if its remaped your be smiling ear to ear, but scoobys tend to be louder than lcr s anyway but im sure u will like it cheers

I ve had a 57i cone for 2 and a half years/20000 miles and also have had no issues at all, Its definately louder than standard and grunts until the turbo spools then it becomes super whoosy. With the 007p DV a nice blow off when you lift or change. Has become twice as loud since the map too. However i had read post after post and have decided to give the panel filter a go. I have a green cotton and a box to smooth just the work to do :)

Nope, not a red herring. Plenty of MAFs have come to an early demise from oil contamination. It is not visible to the naked eye so there is no point in visually inspecting your MAF, it has to be done on VAG-COM. They very rarely die completely, failure is gradual and because of this it can go un-noticed. Filters aren't the only source of the contamination, the PCV system is pretty unkind to them too.

The two primary causes of MAF failure are:

1. Vibration.
2. Oil contamination of the Sensor Film.

The sensor film gets very hot. If you over-oil your filter, the oil will stick to the MAF and it will degrade MAF performance and as a result, overall engine performance.

I would not put a K&N filter on my hoover, let alone my car. A dry open-cone filter or panel filter in a smoothed and drilled airbox are the only ways to go IMO.

K&N 57i in mine, 15k miles, no problems.

I think even with a panel filter, you would have to oil it, and over oiling would cause the same issues.

Its not about if you oil it, its more how you oil it.

Hiya mate did you have a DV? If so which one was it and did you reverse it? I only ask as people have said in this forum if you reverse them you get a chirpy sound and as that sounds completely different to mine i was wondering if this is why.
