Summers finally here so time to change my gearbox again it seems :)

yr#1 original CDA went back in when i rebuilt the engine but due to helping hands the driveshaft washer plates were left off meanign shaft come loose and cracked the housing

yr#2 removed/stripped/welded above to keep her going while i found one and even on stripdown the gearchange all worn but you know what its like when you need em on the road

yr#3 Finally got sick of a sloppy stick so changed to a mk3 Tdi ASD gearbox with a sweet gearchange and a chance to try out some seriously long tdi ratios - lol

yr#4 ASD box has been grumbling a few months (mainshaft noise+diff breaking up) so finally decided it's time for to change it before it breaks (makes a change) as i reckon it wont last long

3 years / 5k miles / 3 gearboxes and yes i am putting oil in em as i have been draining and checking em every 6 mths

So purely by chance i rang a mate at local breakers i used to work at to see if they had anyhting that would 'fit' to keep me mobile be it gt/tdi whatever there is as the ratios are no bother too me either way and low and behold he's got a 34k mile CDA standard box in stock :):) bargain @ £55 inc vat

now i know what i'm doing when i'm off next week :p

Lets hope this one lasts! :)

me too to be honest, wouldnt mind so much if i ragged the living daylights out the damn thing because i would expect it to fail then but it gets the miss daisy treatment unless i find a loooong clear road, i guess this thing is just cursed-lol

i reversed into work earlier and the whole front end shimmied across as the diff wound over so i better get her done soon before it all falls out lol

when i broke the casing (shaft broke off) i had been doing 60 down the dual carraigeway moments before so i can't be too mad with it - lol

I'm well practised now but it isn't a huge job - awkward without a ramp i would guess but not impossible

check the linkages at the top of the box first before you mess with the cables as that's where the play usually starts

i'll be swapping it out next thurs/fri so if you want the old one for bits ya welcome to it if it helps ?

i have one already out (original) but the change mech in that one sucked worse than a fiat

'tis a bit of a jigsaw puzzle mind :):)

Blimey Flap, I think billo had a better record than that when he was just on the first phase of IHI

No rest for the wicked - it's revenge for me leaving it lying around 6mnths every year i guess - lol

as i had planned front speakers and trim sorting for my week off i fitted them tonight instead as a peace offering to the damn thing, meant to be chopping up the rod chassis so that will probably fall on my foot tomorrow now :headhurt:

i do wish/wonder wether all those years ago i should have just stuck a 20vt in it

that would be great many thanks, as said just need this part, its very badly worn on the Ibiza, I think that is why the changes on it are not the best.

all sorted thurs am (sorry been away the weekend) having done it so many damn times now it's getting easier

couple of tips i found to make it easier (for me)

remove the long bar that goes down the ns to the engine mount also makes life easier removing clutch cable

undo small rear mount (3 bolts) but leave lower bolt in loose (wont pull out in situ) until ready to go

take off os drive flange (allen bolt in middle)

once that and all the usual was done i levered it out off the dowels, spun the back up (to release last bolt on mount) turned back down so diff downwards and lifted off

sorted
