my car is hitting 100,000 miles and i have the glow plug light come on under amber. it is effecting the brake lights. they were staying on without the keys in the ignition. i had to pump the brake about 6 times to stop this. any ideas to what this could be? i do not have vagcom. PD130 FR. cheers.

Had a similar problem before, but dont think mine did the brake lights.

There is a switch beneath either the accelerator or brake pedal.

Its basically like a safety cut out switch.

When both pedals are pressed at the same time, it cuts power from the engine.

This went wrong on mine, and threw up the glow plug symbol on my dash.

I'd try and get someone with Vagcom though, but just an idea for you.

Brake pedal switch?

Or to put it another way - brake pedal switch!

I think that you have been confused by what is happening, its the failed brake pedal switch that is holding the brake lights on, this fault is being brought to your attention by the glow plug light being on - not the other way round - its a very common failure.

One note of caution, you are lucky as driving around with your brake lights lit will mean that other drivers will hold back a bit "just in case" - the other failure mode of this switch is to "not" switch the brake lights on - now that can get just a bit dangerous - I'd say get this switch changed A.S.A.P. for your safety and for the safety of others! Your car will give you the same warning if you get brake light bulb failures.

So, have you changed the brake light switch yet? It will not fix itself - it might be working okay now and again - but you know that its already been faulty - there is no magic with this switch, its failed once so you should replace it now before you find out that it has failed in the "off" mode - ie you will have lost rear brake lights - now you don't want that as that could lead to be shunted - and that might be the end. Play safe!

some times when the switchs fail it can kick in the safety feature and cut the power to the engine. if you have not had this fixed yet you really should, its only about a tenner for a new switch!!!

Go into any local VAG dealer and buy a new switch - I'd doubt if an ebay one will be the latest variant - as they keep improving it!

As I said earlier - just ask for one in your nearest VAG dealer - they will sell you the latest variant.

am at a loss now lol
tried two new switches as thought the first must be duff.

wondering if somethin else has blown now.

fuses all look ok and bulbs are both fine. high level one isnt working either so gotta be somethin to do with the switch or wiring.

I don't want to sound mean, but do you know exactly how to change these switches, there is a guide on one of these forums, I seemed to manage to change the one on the Polo okay - but since then I've heard a lot about folk having a problem with setting the new one up correctly before fitting it - then fitting it correctly. Also, to date I've never heard of a duff switch causing any other problems. Bulbs, or wrong new bulbs can cause problems - I see that the Halford guide for the Polo lists a double filament one when in fact it is a single filament bulb - of course you could always try leaving the (side mounted) bulbs out and see if the high level one lights up.
