My first port of call is to gain access to the plug and have a look around that area..

Yup the G`box was replaced and the problem started very shortly after.. possibly the first time the car warmed up properly but i cant be 100% on that.

Where abouts is this earthing wire that may not be connected.

i agree before changing or replacing anything check all earth straps and wires to gearbox check all air hoses as well i had a similar prob and it was the electonic bit on the side of the throttle body i opened it up and soldered it worked fine for a while let us know if you solve the problm

Hello David, sorry to hear your having troubles mate hope you get it sorted soon. Will be interesting to know whats causing it, I was going to mention about the crank speed sensor problem that Snowz had as like you say sounds similiarish symptoms but its already been brought to light, all the best!

Well abit of an update after spending alittle time on it today.

I undone the earthing wires from down by the battery and and on the bell housing and gave them a good clean up ith some hemry paper and made sure they went back on tight.

The next bit is what socked me a little, when i seperated the main plug on the engine loom under the TB there was a nice little puddle of what looked like WATER! I`ve dried that out with a hairdryer and sprayed some damp start in there for now, when i get in tommrow im going to try and clean the pins with a small blade and contact cleaner as there was abit of corrosion on them.

The car now doesnt idle to bad bit is still a little lumpy, i managed to drive it around the block a couple of times and then home (approx 7miles) without any lights coming or losing revs. Thing is now, i think it needs the TB to be aligned to maybe sort the lumpy idle but all im getting now is error when trying to adapt.

The only code that comes back now is the - adaptation not started.

Also had somthing like - control module drive error, although this cleared and didnt come back.

Could it be possible that the water in the plug could have shorted out the TB causing it not to work any more? There for busted the two i have?

potentially, but its worth checking to see if there's any fuses that have 'gone' (unlikely)

there's some electro conductive grease that the tdi people have been using a lot recently on MAF's, it might be worth packing your connectors with that to help the conductiveness

Fuses is also on my list on things to check tommrow.

Where might i find this conductive grease?

I was abit gutted to be honest when it all went back together and it wasnt 100%, afterseeing that water there i thought that had to of been the problem, maybe a good clean with the correct stuff might sort it?

On the plus side, i did find the boost leak that had been causing the car to whistle on boost, one of the IC had rubbed through on an engine mount bolt, so need to contact forge for a replacment.

Dielectric grease - I swear by it (not Tdi) -and use it in all electrical / HT connections now.

just reading the thread, would i be better with the conductive stuff as my pins are already a little corroded?

Or is the non conductive the stuff to get?

certinatly worth a whirl for £6

Trip to Maplins tommrow it is then.

Could it be possible that if it had been arcing because of the water it could have damaged both throttle bodies?

I find it a little strange how the car almost idles 100% yet it wont allow me to realign the TB?

The battry was off while i was doing all this, is it worth whipping it off and back just by itself?

yea, could'nt hurt..
then shut the car, lock it, unlock it open driver door, turn ign on but do not start engine, leave for a minute or so then this should also be doing a throttle body wipe

You know, I have a very similar issue however I know where my fault comes from. The engine harness-to-wiriing loom connector(big round plug).

I think mine has a break in the top half which gradually screws up. I get no power delivery past 2K maybe 3K if I'm lucky but the fix is to move the wires into a position where the connection is good.

Might be worth a shot perhaps?

Further to this, does anyone know of a place that are good with loom repairs?

Well,

I`ve gave the contacts abit of a cleaan and added so dielectric grease and the car started running like a bag of spanners!

I think the problem could also be somthing todo with the plug as somtimes when played wit it runs ok and then it starts running crap again.

Anywho, im so fed up with it now and the fact people wont touch it because of it being modified i`ve hired a low lowder from my brothers mate and going to drop it off at Bill`s friday lunch time, and hopfully the master can do his work :D.

Time to pluck the money tree i reckon!

sounds stressful matey. might require a new throttlebody i think as have heard of it but think your right in letting someone with experience work there magic over it. good luck fella.

p.s cant be maf related can it . try unplugging that when its on and you can maybe rule that out if it makes no change.syptoms sound similar to maf failing you see. anyhoo good luck, i hope its fixed soon for you.:)

I`ve tried a known working 2nd hand TB, and also had another member come round in his car so i could try his but still the same.

I have tried unplugging the MAF yes, but made no differance, also if it was MAF related i cant see why i would trow up the codes im getting.

Yup your right its pretty stressful and expensive!
