Not meaning to sound like a **** but I'm sure I have mentioned that plug on numerous occasions and on numerous different threads and this is the first to actually confirm the problem!

Its a seriously common fault with all VAGs using the same plug, most 'hardcore' tuners hardwire after the first sign of issue. Its actually the cause for most faults on these lumps, most faults which are often also easily identified as being MAFs, Plugs/Packs etc

I had the exact issue as you b3nny and fixed it by doing what bill has done. Cleaning it up a hell of a lot and filling it with vaseline

tweaking the pins after running solder down them to "wet" their surface again is what fixed it.
I did not apply grease after, but wrapped the connector
