Brings a new meanin to 'spirited B-road drive'.

Never going to do that again though.

my ibiza cupra tdi is only doing 30mpg!!!!!! any ideas? recently serviced BUT i checked the air filter and though did not look clogged was a bit grey and black at the edges. It has done about 8000miles since last changed. As it cost me£30 i don't want to just change it if it is not the culprit.
diesel here in rayleigh essex is 97.9 so at least the pain ain't too bad

How old is the car? And how many miles? The older it gets the lower your mpg will be.

If its not too old, then I suggest wearing lighter footwear, especially for the right foot! :cartman:

the Leon tank is bigger than the Ibiza...my cousin manages nearly 600 miles around London compared to my 400. hopefully that helps a tad :D

In london you average speed is going to be around 25 mph, good for fuel economy as against 70-80mph on the motorway, but 600 miles???

Was he pushing the car for some of it??

Just a thought, but to get good mpg, you have to drive less agressive from the lights etc... but wheres the fun in that?

But seriously.....30mpg from a diesel? It should be at least 45.

What sort of driving is it in (i.e urban/motorway/ or both)?

it IS mostly urban but it always has been when i was getting 40mpg!!!!! NOTHINg has changed. I have even been driving like an old fart i.e. 4th gear at 30 but still getting worse. 2004 with 35k miles. Even took it for a longer run up to lakeside/m25/a127 southend but no better.

Not strictly true. From new, your MPG generally improves then levels off. It's only when you start getting to silly miles that it'll start to tail off, when your injectors start to get a bit past their best.

I don't think my Ibiza (PD130) reached it's best until 30-40k miles, and it was still maintaining the same figure at 102k miles.
My last Passat (PD130, same engine) started to tail off a little after 140k...

Completely disagree - you'll never get anywhere near the economy of a steady motorway cruise when you're only averaging 25mph in urban traffic. Urban stop/start traffic brings out the worst MPG in TDIs, sometimes you will struggle to beat 40mpg.

i'm constantly driving in town and average 46mpg...and not generally at 25mph. i guess changing gear before reaching 2k revs helps out ;)

Eggs well and truly sucked. Lol

I was assuming he was doing 25 mph constantly, not stop start traffic

Im not well up on diesels but some principles are the same.

Heres an excellent link showing you how to clean your induction kit, well its a panel filter but id imagine the same;

http://www.vpcuk.org/forums/showthread.php?p=200541

I would guess that your engine isnt getting enough air in, when this happens it overfuels, then the oxygen sensor, even though unburnt fuel goes past it, will only recognise higher amounts of oxygen, and so will assume not enough fuel, increasing it and making the situation gradually worse.

I would recommend buying a cleaning kit, check out ebay i got one for about £12. And then i would also recommend cleaning the throttle body out with some appropriate aerosol cleaner.

Finally put it back together and buy a decent fuel additive, forte fuel treatment is excellent, only on ebay i think. Also very good is Redline S-1 or S-2 available from www.opieoils.co.uk. I think they have a diesel treatment.

That should solve most of your issues, as the above usually have the highest impact on whether an engine runs well or not. After that its smaller things such as air hoses, pipes etc check for splits and cracks, but as ive said it shouldnt reduce mpg so much.

All I do is go to the pumps when its on the E/red, wonder why a full tank only lasted two days, then cry when the price goes up.

Works for me?

(Oh, and repeat that process)

Some people! Screw your trip figgly diggly things, and enjoy burning loads of dead plants and animals.

JEES MAN?! :)

was sittin just below a 3/4 tank and now sittin on half tank and olny done about 30 miles, yeah 30 MILES, absolutely shocking! i think i have a more serious problem than i first thought, my brother is going to check the sensor which calculates the fuel meter to see if its broken or faulty, i am also awaiting a K&N cleaning kit to get all the dirt out incase thats causing problems and im also gonna go get some redex again, seemed to help a bit last time!, starting to gett quite pissed off with how the car is going through petrol, would be cheaper off getting a cupra at this rate!

Do you by any chance have an accelerator pedal which only has two porsitions. Fully up, or fully down? Heard its a common fault.

Think you should check it mate. I suspect that.

hy everyone....
I only put 99+ petrol in my car and the difference is big! with regular 95 petrol I can only get about 270-280 miles/full tank and with this I get about 310-320 miles/tank all this in mixed driving (urban/motorway/slowly/pedal full down) and much more power ...(I`ve made a test with my beltronics - with 95 petrol about 180hp and with 99+ petrol about 200hp)(my car is a ibiza fr 1.8T remaped). I belive that for those of you with smaller engines (1.2 - 1.4) the fuel consumption goes up because of the wheel change (I`ve seen in someone signature that he has 17" on an 1.2 engine), because of the greater rubber surfuce and the bigger wheel diameter the engine is working harder to turn the wheel.
I`ve also noticed someone saying that if it is colder outside it shouldn`t increase the fuel consumption, but it is not true, the engine needs more fuel to warm up and the cold air is denser(don`t know if I write it correctly) and this will change the resisting force -> the engine works harder to pull the car throu the air.

i managed to loose about a 1/3 of my tank in 50 miles the other day! but the pedal was fully down :D (i then eased off as i noticed the needle so low and i still got 300 out of the vented tank) im getting roughly 300 miles to my tank that costs £45 to fill, my 1.6 leon was about 280 that cost £60 to fill maybe down to about 55 now tho.. but im also getting a hell of alot more fun out of it :D
