i know driving on the motorway will get me more miles but surely i should be getting more then 300 for normal driving on normal roads, ive stuck £20 in last night and it said 185, straight away it went to 175 lol, today after i got in from work it was on 140, i then went on a trip down the m6 and it shot up to 175.

I did a motorway trip of 70 miles each way and left is 65 miles, ive done so far 152 miles so looking at 217 from £20 or am i lol? more like 170 i bet.

With the cold weather have noticed a big drop in the average mpg of my Cupra TDI. Just filled up and managed 280 miles from 32 litres of fuel which ~39mpg and pretty poor even though I have been driving it a bit harder recently. Over the summer I average 48mpg. Its about 1K from its 50K service, will that really make a difference to its fuel economy?

I know that cold weather makes a difference in normally aspirated engines but the turbo just warms it all up anyway. You might get more or better cooling from the IC I suppose! Cold air is good...

I used to notice a big difference with my old Citroen AX with KN filter , especially with the cold air feed sticking just below the front bumper... [B)]

1k before it's service  diesels dirty their air filter way quicker than petrols (more suck) and they dirty their oil quite quickly too.

I bet your oil is black and your air filter is almost as black, both of these things will cause lower MPG

Yep oil is very black, just checked it on the dipstick this afternoon and topped it up. Not sure about the air filter, will take your word for it.

I wondered if it was because the iron engine block takes half my journey to work to reach temperature on the gauge ~6miles in winter ~4miles summer. My previous petrol cars with Alu engines took just over 1 mile.

Once hot the average MPG shows similar figures all year round, it is just the first 6 or so miles which makes my 12 mile commute read lower once I get to work.

If your oil is black it prob wonte actualy be protecting your engine! New oil & filter plus new air filter (or clean it) and a new fuel filter should help loads.

The colder the outside temp is the better your car shoult run, as cold air is denser and combusts better.

The first comment about black oil scared me :p My oil was black after like 1,000 miles LOL. My old petrols used to keep golden oil. Im sure a service will defiantely help MPG.

Anyone see that renault on topgear last week? a decent service helped that thing loads.

I feel your pain, 350 if I really squeeze it.

I do put V-Power in it though, which is supposed to burn very readily versus standard Shell at least.

So, you changed where you're filling up your car?

i mainly use tesco super unleaded though ive tried shell and total and it doesnt make any difference unfortunately. i'd be happy just to get an extra 50 miles out of it

i bought the 1.2 cuz i heard it was 50 miles per gallon, i kind of wished i would of gone for a higher powered one cuz at least i'd get some benefit

Ditto!

I thought it may have just been my car in need of a service but obviously its a common thing.... not sure where the figures come from on the internet, cause it cant be 50mpg! :(

Wish i'd gone for the diesel now!!!

I have started using V-power and my average mpg has been getting better and better. Just been to fill up and noticed before I reset the trip counter that I had got 265 miles out of the last tank. Thats at least 15-20 miles more than I used to get.

Might also be coz I have just surviced it last month to..
