Hi All, just found this forum while looking for a cure to a problem I have with my 2002 V5 so I hope someone can help if possible.
Yesterday after starting the car the engine started missing, I have also notiched that both the front fans are running from cold and there is quite a strange smell coming from some where, also a small smell of fuel, does anyone have any idea please before I start pulling things apart.
Thanks.

Sound like it could be a coil pack that has gone. That would expalin the misfire usually followed by a smell of burning or catalytic converter type smell with the resultant unburnt fuel. The only thing you didn't say was if you engine management light was on which is usually another sure sign?

Think the fans running could be something else, one of them comes on/off with the air con i believe, so try switching that off and check again.

If it is a coil pack be sure not to drive it as this will cause more damage.

It's a 170, it's been fine up til yesterday and then a cold start started it, no different today.
The engine management light did come on yesterday when I was trying to drive it but it didn't come on
today when I had another look at it.
I've had it for a year now and I love it.
Thanks for the replies.

My coil pack went when I was driving the car but luckily I was just about home. The management light flashed on/off to begin with until I got it home. Got the smell of burning then Catalytic smell. The next day I got it to the garage and it stayed on permanent for that short drive. It was quite noticeable the misfire was at about 2K-3.5K rpm when just reving the engine from rest, then disappeared at higher revs.

Are you a member of AA or RAC?

I just had a proper look, please excuse the basic explanation but there is a unit in between the right hand side of the engine and the air box, it's has a electrical connection at the top and a pipe out of the bottom, it's buzzing non stop, even without the car running, what's this called and is it the problem?

Here you go, it buzzes for about 5 mins after the engine has stopped.
Where are the coil packs Situated?

Yep, such a common problem these guys usually carry spare coil packs around with them. If it is that then this is probably the easiest and cheapest way to get it diagnosed and replaced.

Also from the 'Guide' section:-

Got the AA out beginning of the week and like you said they changed the coil for me, £41 fitted.
Thanks for the help everyone, well apart from the guy who got me to take a picture for nothing...LOL
