Sadly it seems the manifold is the most crucial part in these Big Turbo Conversions. It's a bit hit and miss on the reliabilty front unless you cough up a serious load of dosh and go to a Motorsport source.

I'd be interested to see how they'd repair that cracling looking at it;s positioning.

Hooch

What have the company offered so far?

Thats the thing. Hooch has paid a serious amount of money for the manifold and so far it doesnt seem to be upto the job. If I remeber rightly it was a very similar amount of money to what Bill paid Primary Designs for the manifold they made for him.

My JBS manifold is made from 5mm thick steel and has a lifetime warranty against cracking. Its a seriously good well made manifold that wont drop apart when it gets hot. Highly recommend that manifold, just means that DP and wastegate pipework will need to get moddifed.

Think the manifold was 900+vat, but it was worth the money. Dunno what hooch paid for his RS one, but after they had my car, i know how much they charge :O

thing is it does'nt have to be thick to be strong. My PD mani proves this. It does need to be made in a quality manner, with good materials and mounted such that expansion/contraction is not going to stress things further. My PD manifold is ~1.2mm wt only. It has supported 2 race seasons on >2bar boost, latterly with >500bhp. It ran no external supports as I found this stressed the manifold more, not less.
That said my new rhd mani, same as the full-race I have on there right now, is thick wall and blindingly heavy :( which is bad for racecar. (Sch40 pipe fittings on full-race and my new one hence cheaper)

Mine was not ceramic coated so was the same as Hooch's in that respect. My new ones are for engine bay temp control as much as anything.

Those cracks look mighty awkward to fix. Cracking adjacent to welds is typical failure mode but so soon?

the temp of those runners on the dyno looks well hot for just a power run. :hide: Camera I know, but jeez.. its working hard alright.

My PD one would glow to very bright red/yellow at the collector during power runs on full load.. The runners were a bright cherry red. One reason I have moved onto another manifold to try (T3) was to allow for a bigger collector, with a more narrow merge angle which hopefully will not turn yellow as it focus's the heat into the one zone. (remember my previous turbo was 52mm round inlet on the FP)

I'm not sure what RS will be able to do for those cracks with respect to repair. :hide:

Good luck hooch

Say hi to Pat for me

pat at PD?

aye. Pat Barratt aka Mr Primary Designs

You could also try my T3, Tial external gated thick wall, backpurged mani, for RHD, for a whole lot less ££ if you get screwed by RS on a suitable warrantied repair.

I would be nervous of the repair personally. Its had practically no use and failed 3 to 4 times & places now? external gate fell off, support bracket sheared, now split in two places. :(

My thoughts also HOOCH....that manifold will be seroiusly weakened/compromised.

Get it changed for an alternative ;)

All very well get it changed, but what are RS gonna do? Different manifold means changing the downpipe and wastegate pipework. Then it may mean changing oil oil/water lines (not cheap if using speedflow fittings like mine, just ordered another 230 quids worth!)

When you spend best part of £1000 on a manifold, you dont expect it to fail like this. Even if its claimed for motorsport use, doesnt mean its allowed to fail all the time. Its such a wind up when things like this happen  Good luck with RS getting it sorted/refunded/"weighed in".

hope you get it sorted hooch, i know when you got it you said it cost a packet to make, and for that sort of money you would expect quality goods that are suitable for the job........

i paid £2000. that included DP and centre section :s

if i weighed it in i would get about a quid. only weights about 2kg

just got back from meet up with rs fab.
im having a flexy put in the wastegate pipe and also hoping to change the dp to wg pipework flange to v-band. if anyone knows where to get 38mm v-band :D

i will be calling them 2m to see what they have come up with from scratching thier heads for 24hrs.

i also said that this wont be happening again...grrrr phat chance

All the best on the mani mate.

So does ceramic coating manifolds make a huge difference? how much would you expect to pay and whats the benifits?

yea its 3rd time. only 2nd time for mani probs tho
not mensioned coating yet

the dp is fine but its lower temps and lower pressure. the mani was about £1400-1500 on the bill but i was charge like 150quid for external gate pipework and £100 for hanger. they just made up the money else where by putting silly prices on them but i think it was to keep the mani around 1400.
