Join purple and orange together and put them on switched live, yellow on live and black to earth. Its simple!!!!

If you want the gauge to dim, yes use the dimmer switch.

thats not the dimmer block, thats the headlights switch isnt it?

It's the backlight feed, so if the dimmer dims I'm sure the voltage to that will be reduced.
Try it and let us know, can't recall the dimmer block wire colour.
