If left idling for a couple of mins (on the drive to warm up/ de mist or in heavy traffic) my gf's 51 plate 1.6 Leon starts to fire on 3 cylinders. The engine fault light on the dash flashes then after about 10 mins goes constant . When the light turns constant the problem stops and it runs ok, after a day the light goes out and its seems ok. We've changed the EGR valve, plugs, ignition leads and transformer but still has this issue. Any ideas?

Car has been ok for a while now but stalled when reversing and problem started straight away, managent light flashing and engine running or 3 or less cylinders.

Spoke to a garage today, they suggested a compression test on the cylinders. Any one else had the same problems as this?

Not got quite the same problem but had an issue with lumpy running and bad idle when cold. Silicon grease on connections for MAF & MAP sensors seems to do the trick for me, maybe worth a go for a couple of quid

Worth a try! Are these sensors on the downpipe of the exhaust?

??Dodgy coilpack maybe?

I've changed the coil pack already :(

Thanks for your replies, I've run out of cost effective ideas.

I've replaced the coil pack with an OEM one just incase but still got the probs.

No, MAF sensor is on the pipe between the airbox and engine... you can't miss it, all you have to do is but some dielectic grease on the connector..

I'm using a K&N 57i kit, does this cause the symptoms I've explained? As I understand some people have had probs with the oil clogging the sensor up.

Have you got a pic of the MAF so I know what to look for? :(

This is still an issue. Still has misfire on cylinder 3 as VAGCOM error, had cylinder compression tested, mechanic said it had slight loss of compression but shouldnt cause problems. Any ideas? Anyone had similar?

Try swapping the injectors between 2 & 3 ..... see if the fault moves...

hmmm...not tried that one. is it easy to swap the injectors? When the fault occurs I've unplugged the injector and reconnected it (which made no difference at all to the engine). The last mechanic suggested a blocked injector and did an engine flush and put some redex type stuff in the fuel...
