When i first saw the THS design coolers, I thought they were the same as the E-bay jobbies, but on closer inspection the core is of a better qulaity on the THS items, the fin design is lot more dense and thinner, which all points the right direction, the 'bars' in the coor are also slightly smaller, and more of them..
The end tank design mated to a core as small as the THS type 1 isnt as important as on a larger intercooler, as it will fill the whole thing (forced induction basics).. however dweel time, pipe diameter and placement will be critical.
3" on a turbo as small as the K03/K03s/K04 is too big. FACT, as it will reduce flow speeds.
THS will be better than std, but how much better is the question.. and for them money if it is better (how much better dependent), logs to prove would be good..
The car feeling better can be the result of a few things:
1). The car actually being better!
2). The car being laggy, so when it does come up on boost, it feels quicker.
