can engage all gears with no grinding noise but there seems to be no slack as the stick wont go side to side easily.

where ever I put the stick, it stays there

Any ideas what this could be?

Centering spring amiss ? (if there is such a thing) Mine always springs back to rest between 3 and 4 without any force at all.

Yeah all gearboxes spring back to centre but this doesnt.

Gets in gear easy though, so thinking it must be the linkage or similar

There's a clip somewhere on the 2 gearbox linkages - about 2 foot from the actual connection to the gearbox. Sounds like both have come off / come loose. I had one loose which meant I could move the stick to the left and it stayed to the left, but going to right, it would spring back to the normal position. Simply reclipping the clip in should sort it. Happy digging. :D

It goes in the morning to dealership for belt change, will ask them to see if they can check it out, if not i'll have to get under the car and do it myself

It's not really an "under the car" job - More of an "in the bonnet" job. :D Only hassle could be is the airbox might have to be removed, and some other bits. Not too sure on the layout of the leon engine bay. In my fabia, the stock airbox sits right over the gearbox cables, blocking the clips from easy access. Now I have a BMC CDA and the battery has gone, the gearbox cables are easy peasy to reach.

Umm, might be tricky, but I hope now it's sorted for you. It's kind of like a surclip from memory similar to those clips that the vacuum hoses sit in at the back of the engine, but bigger, and on the gearbox cables, somewhere around the springy area.

when car went in for belt today, technician mentioned it and showed me the 2 cable that go to gearbox. the actual cable bushes seem fine but he rekons where the cable connects for the cross movement, the bush may be stiff. Seems like a long aluminimum type one.

I need to get a pic to explain better

I know where it is and what to do, but how do I remove the clips?

Its worth a shot, should only take an hour tops, to open clean any corrosion then grease and re-install

If you look in the first picture, its the one the man in the pic is taking off, which is turn takes off the small lever as it been shown in pic2 (well half way out)

You just lift the centre and then slide the clip off.

There is a a hole in the centre of the clip that goes over the end of the pin. You can just lift it with your finger nail.

I haven't removed the side-to-side shifter, only the main one shown in the 2nd picture but the clips look the same.

thats perfect - i got the idea

Im hoping that this is the cause of the problem. I got perfect movement up and down, its just ide to side

Will try and do it first thing in the morning

Have you tried generously spraying WD40 around the vicinity of the linkage? Ideally whilst someone is moving the gearstick around.

Your description sounds like a bush with crap in it - causing the lever to be stiff in one axis. (?)

Make sure you don't find a hole and spray WD onto your clutch ;)

Yesterday I took airbox off and sprayed the joints, well near enough bathed them in wd40. Felt like it got slightly better.

Think the bush is going to have to come off to clean all the crap off to be re-greased and put back in

Could it be on the gearstick end by any chance ???
