Sounds like a bearing??

Hay all

I need help with a noise I've got that I'm worried about that sounds like a bearing of some sort
I've not had alot of dealings with bearings going on car but this does sound like one. It's definately not a wheel bearing as I've listened going around corners and theres no more noise when turning either way. I have had a bearing go on wheels before so definately not this.
The other thing that has been changed very recently is my Front discs and pads, the discs are EBC Ultimax with grooves. Is it possible that this could be causing the noise?
I have been running winter tyres for three ish months but it aint this either as it doesn't change when changing road surfaces.
I'm pretty sure its not the thrust bearing in the clutch as it only happens at 30 MPH+

What can people suggest that I can try to prove/dispove other bearings??
Is there a bearing in the turbo that might be on its way out?
I still need to test this but doesn't seem to make a noise when turbo isn't spinning at 30 MPH+

Any help would be greatly recieved

Nearly all engine noises are rpm related rather than vehicle speed related.

What RPM will the turbo start to spin?
I know I get boost from 2,000 RPM plus but does the turbo start to spin before the boost effects the engine?
The noise is definately getting louder and starting to get really worried

Do you get the noise when you're not booting it and the car is off boost?

Aye all the time above 30 MPH, have tried getting car to do low RPM in fourth to see that but not easy.

Given that you've recently had your wheels off and its speed related then I would guess at it being related to the wheels. Maybe you had a split ball in your bearings or something and removing the wheel has allowed it to move or fall out? (not familiar with LEON bearings do don't know if they're sealed or not). Whatever it is I'd put money on it being related to the work you've done on the car.

I`ve got the same noise on my LC up to about 40 mph . A garage checked wheel bearings , drive shafts etc & found nothing wrong . I put 18`s on last march with yokohama tyres so I thought it could be the tyres as they`ve worn down a bit .
My cousin had the same noise when he fitted wider tyres to his car , switched them back and the noise had gone .

I put some realy crappy front tires on my LCR when i was a bit skint and needed to get it through the MOT and they are so noisy sounds like a whiring noise thats all i can say about it

One thing that crossed my mind when I first read your post, is to check the rear tyres on the inside edge - I know it sounds daft, but I had it and a few people commented on the same "it went away when the rear tyre were replace".

I have to say though, grooved discs sound like a very good candidate.

sounds like your tyres could be egg shaped.

i had this problem on my st170 before i changed the tyres.

Initially I though wheel bearings but didn't notice a difference when turning around corners
After taking it to a garage today and going out a spin with the owner it does seem to change when weaving left to right and vise versa so might be wheel bearing.
Car booked in at 10am tomorow so will let you all know
I'm hoping it is the wheel bearing as that is the cheapest case

The noise seems to vary depending on the road surface , thats why I think it`s the tyres

Like Feel said, I think you could find it's just your grooved discs. Do you find it gets louder as you brake? If so the constant noise could be the pads wearing in.

My dad just got some grooved discs on his car and it makes a lovely whiring noise under braking. Sounds like a sequentional (sp.) gearbox (or like mine did before it went )

What kind of noise is it? Knocking, whirring, grinding etc?

It could even be something as simple as a wheel slightly loose! I had this a few weeks ago a couple of days after having all 4 tyres changed. I was convinced it was a driveshaft going as it shared most of the same hallmarks of only really knocking when on a light throttle etc, not under braking or acceleration but not in corners either. When I took the front wheels off to have a look, I found one of the wheels had 4 of the five bolts slightly loose so the wheel was obviously gently rocking on the studs when not under load, making the noise!

All this despite the tyre fitters actually using a proper torque wrench to tighten the bolts, although to what torque it was set I dont know.

Could be that aswell Chris. When I put my spacers on the bolts wouldn't tighten because they were too long, but I didn't notice this so took the car out and this very loud and worrying kind of rumble noise was happening at about over 30.
When I jacked it up to check I could actually move the wheel side to side..!
