Approved Scheme - 30 day exchange

To be honest I've had bits of paintwork done on most of the cars I've had from brand new including my Cupra as there is usually something or other not right.

Was getting a scratch fixed that my Cupra had on from new and they found a very small dent in the back bumper which wasn't something I'd done (car was 3 weeks old and not really been anywhere). The garage agreed to fix it FOC and it a pretty good job, but not 100%. You can't tell unless you're actually looking for it though.

Thanks to all for your helpful comments and suggestions.

I hope to speak to the dealer tomorrow to check out our options for an exchange. Will post back with outcome in due course...

Hi.

That colour looks very much like Platinum Grey. My Altea XL is that colour, and personally I think it is one of the best colours although I do believe that it is discontinued now. The paint code is LS7U and should be printed on a sticky data label on the inside cover of the service book.

That looks too light to be Platinum - see my sig.

Bottom line regardless of what colour it turns out to be, we still need to be happy with the whole package so I may still have a word with the dealer regarding exchange and see what options we have. Can't say I'll be too happy having body repairs/paint job done on a 3/4 month old car to be honest...

Well its only as you know about it. but you would shocked at how many cars arrive at the docks, get delivered to the dealer and have to go to the paintshop for repairs. I only know so much about the docks as most of my mates have worked at the local ones. Also explains why we all have so many Audi and Merc pens and keyrings etc. I remember one mate, used to nick the spare alloy wheels off of certain cars and then sell full sets.

Hmmm....not sure about the Platinum grey - in certain lights ours actually looks darker...

Suppose the only way to 'put this to bed' will be to get the paint code as suggested and get down Halfords this weekend. Unfortunately haven't managed it this week as its been a bit dark and wet in evenings...:(

In any event, after a long chat with the missus last night we've decided to keep the car and get it repaired (as rightly agreed FOC by dealer) and see how it comes back after that. She thinks I'm being a bit fussy about the colour and she's happy with it regardless of which 'grey' colour it turns out to be...

Just to prove my wife right about being fussy, I've since noticed an annoying vibration/rattle (only on rougher roads) which I think is coming from the centre air vents.:(
We also have the 'owl' type noise in low revs (more noticable in stop/start traffic) that I've seen mentioned in other posts from owners of TDI models....Has anybody else getting this had it rectified by dealers and if so what was the cause ?...just so I can ask them to investigate when its in for body repair and sound like I know what I'm talking about...:D

We should still be within the 30 day period after repairs hopefully so if we're (or should that read I'm..) not happy with the car after this, we should still have the exchange option..

Doesn't surprise me about the docks either and a nice little side-line for your mate...

It seems that a lot of the tdi's have this owl noise to varying degrees. Mine came to the fore when I got it remapped and it was so loud and annoying it was one of the reasons I sold it.

At one point I got the map switched off and took it to the dealers. They put a new turbo on it and that solved the problem until I put the map back on and it came back. Now I don't really know if the map had anything to do with it as I put the map back on straight away but in my opinion it did as it puts more pressure on the turbo.

As it happens my wife has a 1.9tdi which is not mapped and there is a very slight owl noise but not bad enough to do anything about it.

Thanks for the info' POLKR.

Sounds like our 'owl' noise is more like your wife's car, slight and only really noticable between 1000-2000 revs when accelerating/decelerating in traffic at lower speeds. I've not noticed it at motorway speeds (maybe as there's more wind/road noise anyway..) but will keep an ear out for it in future..
If it doesn't get any louder its something we can live with...

It worries me though that yours was worse after a remap (something I was thinking of doing at a later date - :D), especially if it was bad enough for you to want to get rid...:(
While we're on the subject, which model did you have and what was the difference in performance after a remap..? 'Owl' noise aside, was it worth remapping and what was the cost..? Also did the tuner 'demap' for dealer warranty repair and 'remap' afterwards FOC..?

Oh well...our mind's been made up for us re-possible 30 day exchange as I've just booked car in for body repairs and earliest we can have a courtesy car is 30/1....so by the time we have it back that weekend I think we will be outside the 30 day period anyway...

At least the missus is happy now...

I'll post back once I've confirmed the colour, if anybody's still interested....

I had a 2.OL tdi Sport which is the same as yours but with the sports pack and in manual.

Owl noise aside the difference was huge. Transformed the car to be honest.

The car was a LOT more fun to drive and was worth it in every way except for the noise. I got revo on mine and my local dealer was happy to turn the setting back to normal whenever I wanted. I don't know if all will be so accomodating though as you can buy a switch to do it yourself. Revo is the most expensive but has the best reputation. It is £586 inc vat.

Sounds like a remap is worth trying then at some stage POLKR, as your opinion confirms most other posts I've read on here tbh...

Actually, we were a gnats gonad away from going for the FR TFSI DSG model instead of the TDI 140, especially after an awesome test drive in one, as we only do about 8k per year of mostly short work commutes (which the dealer said ruled out the FR TDI 170 for DPF reasons..).
In the end, mpg figures (and being the wrong side of 40.) came into it, plus the option of remapping to match the 170 swung things in favour of the Stylance.

Anyway, just to get my head round this, is a remap simply a software change to the ECU that a tuner achieves with special software, or does it include fitting of additional parts (other than the optional on/off switch you mention POLKR)..

Maybe any other TDI/Revo upgraders out there can confirm if they have had problems with excessive 'owl' noise after remapping...

Apologies as I appear to have gone a bit 'off thread' here...

Remapping is software only which is invisible to dealers unless they drive the car. I havn't driven the tdi dsg but I did drive the FR dsg before buying the manual cupra. If I were you I would change it for the FR dsg for the sake of 8k miles a year. The petrol dsg was awsome when I drove it and I much prefer the petrol Tfsi to the tdi but then thats just my opinion. The only two negatives with the FR dsg are 1. The fuel but 8k /yr is nothing and 2. The FR suspension is MUCH harder than the stylance which is very comfortable.

The tdi will remap to 185 bhp but the FR petrol Tfsi will remap to 260bhp!! Another thing..dunno if your stylance has bluetooth in it. The system is a godsend and if you were to get the FR get one with this.

Horses for courses though.

Hear what you're saying POLKR and I agree the FR DSG is an awesome car to drive and if we were 10 yrs younger there wouldn't have been a choice to make...260bhp OMG ! :-o

But also as you say, horses for courses, and after part-ex'ing our old Focus 2.0 petrol Ghia (115PS I think..), 140bhp stock with 185bhp an option plus probably twice the torque of the Focus, the Stylance DSG is still a pretty good upgrade for us, with mpg gains and the softer ride (lower back probs..) helping the decision...:headhurt:

I did some sums and reckon 8k with the TFSI @ average 25-28 mpg would cost (suprisingly..) around £500-£600 more annually than the TDI 140 @ 40mpg, based on extra fuel, tax and insurance costs. I'll get my pipe and slippers out now...:weedy:

Agree on the Bluetooth, and another reason we went for this particular car was it had this plus the 17" alloys (makes up slightly for the lack of sports suspension..) and the con pack, oh and the DSG box of course...:D
Shame it didn't have the winter pack as I liked the bum warmers in the courtesy car we had for a few hours...nice & toasty in this weather....[:@]

For my tuppence worth.
Keep the car, it's a nice shade of grey whatever and looks easy to keep cleanish.

As for owls and re-mapped 2.0TDIs, I previously had a mk5 Golf GT TDI, and this too had the owl (plus clicking dual zone a-c), the owl is apparently a feature of the turbo spooling up and down on the car (vanes changing pitch). The re-map is essential in my humble opinion. It gives the car a proper rev range and should be huge fun with the DSG. I wouldn't even worry about getting it re-set before dealer visits, just ask for a low boost version of the map which will protect your clutches and keep the power band similar to the original (just more of it). Unless the dealer take it for a pretty long drive they won't notice it as they normally just whizz the car round the block for a roadtest.

Thanks for the advice Beezer - did my wife send you a PM asking you to say that...?..

I think you're both right and we will be keeping it. I'm sure I'll warm to the colour eventually...

Your expalnation of the 'owl' noise sounds the most plausible I've heard so far and love the way these get called 'features' by manufacturers and dealers...

I'm pretty convinced about the remap now and have made enquiries with our local Revo specialist via email - Intelligent Tuning in Flintshire - anyone used these before...?
My main reservation being matching the increased power to the DSG without causing later problems and big repair bills...I'm sure decent tuners know what their doing though...

Yeah, and I'm still waiting for the £50 she promised me!!

REVO will be fine, they can wind down the boost at lower revs to protect the clutch. As for long term damage - how long are you going to keep the car for? It will only wreck the engine if you abuse it, but you'll find that once the novelty has worn off the re-map will make you lazy (even lazier than DSG does!) as you can ride about on a very broad torque band.
