overheating

hi all.ive got p reg beezer with a 1.4 engine in and its decided to start overheating.just my luck as i planned to sell it i replaced the thermosat as i thought this was the cause and when i filled the expansion tank up with water again it burst at the seam when it got hot and started leaking.now the temp gauge rises really quickly and i end up with losing all the water out the expansion tank and lots of steam out the bonnet.could this be caused by a air lock in the system somewhere? or the head gasket? any advice or ideas would be greatly apriciated.

may be the head kasket gone. if its heating up that quick. is there any oil in the water

it's likely that there's either an air lock... or the thermostat is still duff

remove it and pump the air round by squeezing the top pipe (when it's cold unless you like burns)

cheers for the replys.ive removed the thermosat and bleed the water pipes loads of times and its still doing the same thing.ive removed each pipe one by one and ran a hose pipe down each one to make sure they wernt crudded up and it aint made any difference although alot of bubbles came out of the expansion tank.the temp gauge reaches the max mark n im getting a banging noise n the pipes move round due to the banging.as for the gasket theres no oil in the water n vice versa.

take the water pump off see if it moves. do they have metal or plastic impellers? ive heard of the plastic one braking up on other VAG's. but im just guessing as ive never worked on a 1.4 engine

This isnt a mk3 witha 20vT we are talking about here...

so all other water pumps dont ever fail because it isnt on a 20vt?

doesnt mean that the water pump cant die....my brothers on his ford died last week and he has exactly the same symptoms. The bearings in it were buggered

i had this on my 1.4 and i think it was the blade in the water pump had snapped or something.

Im very sorry for the offence caused. I was making a joke about the notorious problem with your 20vT engines.

on a guess im guessing the water pump as i spent 3 and a half hour bleeding the damn thing n its still doing it so im riping the engine apart to fit a new one.the blades on the new pump are metal not plastic too. thank you for all your replys .@)

righty just a quick update on my progress with my beezer.it was the water pump that had gone due to the bearings and the complete fan was just spinning on the drive shaft.once again thanks for the ideas. )
