Does anyone know how current mappers of the VAG 170TDI engines manage to copy the contents of the ECU prior to remap?

I've been told that one of the stumbling blocks with mapping this engine is that there are currently no protocols for taking a copy of the contents of the ecu through the OBD port.

The only process to do this is by a direct connection onto the ecu. While this can be done you need to drill off the tamper proof bolts to open the ecu case which will leave distinct entry marks resulting in an invalidated warranty if this is checked.

Bear in mind that I'm not offering this as gospel- this is what I've been told and now I'm looking for your comments! :)

If you check some of my earlier comments/thread you will find that SS have built a "doggle" type device that scrambles/unscrambles the s/w [SS are also the prefered tuner for VW racing so probabley used this to gain access codes etc,] - this is the way ALL manufactures are going, MB and BMW have already gone this way. the other thing to remember VW are mixing the ECU manufactures across the brands this thows another spanner in the works too!!

Hi Oldoiler!

OK just re-read the thread from the start- now makes sense! Built in software security giving them greater control (and potential for profit through preferred suppliers- Superchips etc).....

I've already posed this question to jonnyash; I'd also like to ask you: now you've had this map for a while what are you opinions of it?

 Ok, so if you want to get to the ECU it can be done... and discretely. Thankyou. :) What I really wanted to know: what are your thoughts on living with a remapped 170?

TBH I'm this close to shelling out 600 notes to have it done- although ideally I'd like to canvass as much opinion as possible before I take the plunge...

I'll let you know more after it's first service next week !! but so far so good
l o a d s of torque - which is what I wanted and IF driven below 60 it will return 45/47 but have never that low long enough on my trips!!
It is quite hard car to drive slowly - just does not feel right! paid 525 [which includes 1yrs warranty, but I have not had problems with my previous 6 remaped cars because of the upgrades] for mine but it is dependent on your local agent. .................

just been and looked at the tunit option! and thats as far as i would go 195bhp + 280ftlb you must be joking for that price, standard is car doing around 182bhp +263ftlb so if you thinnk 13bhp + 17ftlb is worth it then you must have money to waste

This is a good point. However someone on here was saying how much quicker the car felt after tunit. So maybe it is worth it?

Thing is, all the maps for the 170 are around 200bhp becuase of the DPF and most people seem happy with the improvement - which I suppose is a little surprising if the actual increase in BHP is quite small

how much of it is psychological just beacause there expecting it to feel faster or want it to after spending that kind of money???its the torque that makes the car feel faster 17ft lb is not alot compared to a map that adds 59 ftlb of torque

Spot on, that torque is worth a lot and certainly catches out a lot of "high performance cars" check out some of the european track racing that are racing SEAT Leon TDI. [abt 281bhp ............................
