Also have this problem, sometimes doesn't go in and takes a few go's!sometimes it just slips out aswell, hoping its something simple to fix and won't need to change the whole box

mine keeps selecting 3rd instead of 1st, 1st is a ******* to try and get, have to go into second and then first to get it properly

I've had this problem. If you push the lever HARD to the left before pushing up/ foward to select first, then it goes in... This wasn't good enough for my GF as she wasn't strong enough to push the lever to the left.

I've literally just fixed the problem. I fixed it a few days ago by loosening the mechanism in the housing but it meant the mechanism wasn't sucured to the housing perfectly. You can still get all the gears perfectly though and the mechanism was securely in place, just not fully tight.

However, i've just this second had another go at it. I'm not too sure what i did but it's now working perfectly. After tightening the mechanism i couldn't get 1st without using force. I loosened it up again thinking "ah well, it will have to be loose but at least i can get all the gears..."

So i loosened it up again but disaster! I couldn't get reverse!! Pushing the lever down before moving it to the left and foward, ie selecting reverse, only selected 1st, and selecting 1st actually selected 3rd! I was shitting myself thinking i feked the box!

i thought i'd tighten the mechanism up again and have another go. I tightened it up and was knocked for six as all the gears were working perfectly again, somehow...

My advice would be to loosen up the mechanism in the housing. Remove the gaiter and other bits if there are any. There's 2 bolts, one at the front, one at the rear. loosen them both and keep checking if you can get it in 1st. If you can get 1st, make sure it is 1st and not 3rd! turn the engine on, leave the handbreak up and select reverse. Slowly release the clutch and if the car tries to go backward it should be fine. Make sure though by selecting 1st and slowly releaseing the clutch. If you're in 1st it should pull quite hard. to be 100% sure, select 3rd and slowly release the clutch. It should pull less than 1st. Make 1 final check by going through all the gears.

If you can get all of the gears with ease, you can do one of two things. Leave it, or try to tighten the mechanism back up. If after tighnening you can't get 1st again, just loosen the mechanism again and try again...

Like i said, all i did was loosen the mechanism and drove the car for a few days like this before deciding to try and do it properly. i tightened the mechanism and could no longer get 1st (without using force). Then i loosened it again and couldn't get reverse. 3rd was where 1st should have been, and 1st was where reverse should have been. Then i panicked and tightened the mechanism and to my euphoric amazment all the gears worked perfectly.

Very sketchy advice, i know, but it worked for me so hopefully you will get good results too.

Hope that helps.

Ninja, where do you live? If you're close i might have a go at it but it depends if the gear box is the same as mine...

wow it really works ...after having gay trouble trying to change my oil (undoing the sump plug bolt grrr which i didnt even undo and took it to a mech which couldnt do it so he ended up sucking it up through the dipstick) ...anyway i realised some bolts were loose so i tightened them up and its like having a brand new gearbox ...my gearchanges are soo smooth now! oooow man, and i didnt even mean to fix this ..someone up there loves me.

...but on the downside i need to change the sump gasket coz its leaking is that a hard job? i got quoted £130 ...pshhhhht!! so i left it for now (oh and the bolt is kinda rounded off now *ahem - my bad*)
