An expensive motor car its becoming......

Shortly after getting the car back from RPM, had a little trouble selecting gears which progressivly got worse, had a little look and the metal bracket with the weight on top of the selector tower of the 02A had cracked and was leaning over - easy fix take off bracket , bend back & weld, refitted braket all was good until it started going wrong again 50 miles later at the EA RR day where I lost all gears except 2nd & 4th.

Turns out one of the selector cables knackered, so decide to have both changed (kerchang)

Cometh Brands hatch, Cordy rocked
First time Ive had to give it any serious abuse since reworking and boy did it go, nice to be able to hold onto the revs longer and dump it it further up the rev range upon upshift - ace. was going well until I developed a slight engine speed related noise/vibration - odd - carried on and noise dramtically got worse & louder over the next lap - clatterclatterclatterclatterclatterclatterclatterclatterclatter (noise could be heard over the TB's) eased right off to limp back to the pits and lost drive on the run up to druids, coasted round and pulled off - engine still running albeit badly & clattering.

Session stopped & got towed back to the pits - after a little inspection attemped to crank her over and all it did was turn over extremly quickly as if ther was no compression - started thinking the worse:(
whipped off the cam & belt cover - nothing snapped or mangled or anything out of place. Stuck it in gear and moved it back and forth, slight binding noise but no engine turning over - odd,

In the meantime AA were called for assistance, took me a little while to convince the call centre person that a man in a little van couldent sort it and would 'have' to be recovered - car was towed to paddock to await mr AA man who was easily convinced he couldent do anthing for it - rigid tow back to RPM (scary experiance) who are 15mins away from Brands Hatch, after a quick look the flywheel had a bit of a run out and was not connected to the crank shaft in any way. Will know more when the g'box is off

A little peeved as you can imagine, but a certain Mr Rob Huff thought it sounded quite nice when it was out:)

Fecking cars......

couple questions - did RPM take the flywheel off or did everything they do happen with the bottom end in the car ?

if you are running a std-weight flywheel and clutch, then I'm afraid its the trip to 8K rpm that has done this (the stock stuff is very heavy, 21lb I seem to recall just the flywheel) - likely broken flywheel bolts (this has happened to other people) - solution is to lighten the flywheel to around 11lb and fit ARP flywheel bolts (£80 a set from Jabbasport) and make sure the bolts are fitted properly

bad luck, but you are only at the beginning........

Not sure I understand your question fully, but as far as I know RPM havent touched the flywheel as part of the engine work.

But yeah lighten the flywheel, ARP bolts was discussed.

Bad luck yes but am fortunate it happened in my own backyard and not at the 'Ring for instance

what I am asking is, has the flywheel been removed or is it as it was when it came from the factory ? its really important how its fitted and its easy to get it wrong (and these things REALLY matter when the revs start to rise above 7.5K). If its never been off then its a simple bolt failure likely due to an overrev and no-ones to blaim really.

If you ever get the opportunity, I would seriously consider some arp rod bolts also (can be done with the engine in the car I think by taking the sump off)

flywheel off scenario... yep.
everything as RobT says

not the first and not the last
(thinking of my own which is lightened flywheel and stock bolts currently eak!
)-8200rpm limiter with maybe more to come.

In the time Ive owned the vehicle its not been off, going through the wadge of reciepts wich date back to 2000, theres nothing to suggest its been off either.

Provided I've not fubar'd it should be a simple fix, shame it happened before lunch as it was going realy well.

They're in Watling street, Dartford http://www.hispecmotorsport.co.uk/

Thats per disc so you'd be looking at £50+vat

I would strongly advise against you taking your existing discs off, as you car will be off the road until they get round to it, which could be any given amount of time unless you can come to arrangement where they do it while you wait(unlikely)

Or you could try ECP as they do ATE POWER DISCS with a fancy groove put into them already.
