1st check the engine code if you can find it (top of the timing belt cover) tomake sure it isnt a 1.0 swapped in there :)

2nd if you can - get the ignition system and timing checked - if its out you can lose a hell of a lot of pull

3rd while ya there check for loose/split air pipes again results as above and easily missed or leant on

4th as its had a service - make sure the plug leads are on right ;) dont worry we all do it at least once

hello and welcome btw :)

I'll check the engine code tomorrow and write it down. Would any of you be able to identify the engine from the code?

Will they check the ignition system and timing in a general retune?

Would they check this in a retune too? (loose/split air pipes)

:D Shall get my Dad to have a look at the plugs!

Thanks for the help everyone! Shall be ordering a k&n induction kit on thursday (payday) and get it booked in at the garage for a retune.

I've heard about engine additives.. Are they worth looking into or are they just a type of placebo?

So I've been to see my friend's Dad who owns a local garage.. He's said that getting it retuned will do nothing to it, to make any different to the performance i'd have to get the EMU remapped, which costs a bomb and isn't worth it! He's said to get a k&n induction kit, new exhaust ,etc. and a larger manifold. Also to replace the spark plugs.

Sounds like a plan!

And does anyone know anything about the engine additives? Worth getting?

I think he meant to say ECU and not EMU, but anyways, not worth the money on a 1.4. Induction kits work a treat on the 1.4 engines tho. Or at least it did on mine as the throttle response was 100% better and the sound was awesome.

As for the fuel additives, they are OK. Personally I run my car on V-power/optimax fuel as it has most of the additives added in already. Or like you said you can just buy them separately (Redex I think they are called). Might be worth buying couple bottles and add them in into your next couple of tanks of petrol, as they help clean out the engine internals. Helps get rid of coke and carbon deposits and clear out the injectors a little. As they say, every little helps. And at £4 a bottle it isn't gonna break your bank either.

Haha yeah, ECU :p That's what he said, just my memory failing me!

Just wondering, would I have to declare the Induction kit to the insurance? And would it increase my insurance at all? (I'm 17 with no NCB..)

I'll have a look for some redex then :) Thanks!

Desperately need new tyres for the car aswell! They're first on my list..

While I'm on stealing as much help from here as I can, does anyone have any websites for decent/cheap tyres? Been recommended Pirelli's..

:)

First the induction kit. Yes you should declare it is the simple answer but its not as simple as that. One of my previous insurance companies didnt want a penny extra for an induction kit. But for example Elephant wanted around £100 which is just pure madness. I declared my alloys but never got to declaring the induction kit (mainly because it takes 3 seconds to take off and £100 really takes the biscuit), but don't want to be opening up a big can of worms. But I will say, DO declare your mods.

As for the tyres..........mytyres.com is definitely the best place to get some from. And Toyo T1-R's seem to be the peoples favourites. I can confirm this as I also had a set and they were superb. Once I wear out the current set on my valver, I'll definitely get some Toyo's again.

Hmm, I think I'll give Frizzel a ring and see how much extra they'd charge me for my insurance with it before buying one. If it's too much, I'll just keep the car how it is and sell it once I save a bit up in the bank.

Haha, I've looked all over mytyres.com and couldn't work out how to order tyres, and why a website that everyone says is fantastic, looks like it was made by a 10 year old :D So I tried mytyres.co.uk and bingo! ;)

Frizzell are pretty good when it come to sensible mods. They are part of the "Liverpool Victoria" insurance company. And they were the ones I just phoned up to tell them I got some new alloys for the car and they just said."yup, we have added this to your policy now" and didnt want a penny more.:funk: Bell/Elephant/Admiral one the other hand [:@] :censored: [:@]

But ring Frizzell just to double check

Haha! So Frizzel have got back in touch..

*laughs* £350 EXTRA on top of my 1250 for my insurance! Well, it's 350 extra for the 8 remaing months of my insurance! Haha they can get lost..

They also said they won't insure my Dad if he gets the performance chip for his 1.9 tdi renault laguna estate...

I'm just going to go ahead and stick the kit on. I can just take it out if need be. Thing is, I'm regretting phoning up now because it'll be on the records of my inquiry..

So the guy that made the thread about where to get induction kits for 1.4s is wrong? Maybe the kit for a 1 litre polo fits? :S
