Hi,

I have always had std. aircon in previous cars. I read the manual and it is still a tad cunfusing!

If i just turn up the fan without anything else the cc seems to work anyway, hit auto and the fan just goes full speed which is loud and a tad annoying. Econ I am completely baffled with what it does...


Anyone able to explain this in simple english for me?

Demist button - puts ALL the a/c to the screen and side vents

auto button - plus using the directional buttons on the console should give directional a/c, fan speed may be high at start but should die down after reaching your preset temps
Econ button - plus using the directional buttons on the console - ditto will put less load on the engine and takes longer to control temp
Have also noticed that Seat do an electrical front screen - but not in the options list??!! - do miss that

ECON turns the air con compressor off and you just get standard
blowers .

If you alter the fan or directional buttons when its in AUTO it will turn off the climate control.

When its in AUTO just set the temperature you want and leave it - it will direct the air wheres its needed so that the entire cabin gets to that temperature.

PS. the fan speed in AUTO will adjust (get lower) as it reaches the desired temperature.

One question, when set to auto, it gives more air to the windscreen then on the feet and i think that its strange because when we need to heat something we heat it from down to up...

Does it work the same way to you or mine have a problem ?

It will detect if you have smelly feet and avoid that part of the cabin

But seriously I know there are floor vents in the back, are there any in the front?

The floor vents are in the centre column at the front and blow down. I find that when cold the climate control directs the cold air to the windscreen once it has started to warm up the air is redirected to back to the front and floor vents.

Personally I like it like this as the car gets warm gradually and I have my heated seats to keep me warm while I wait. My mum prefers the old method of super heated air blowing out the vents which made my eyes water to get the car warm as fast as possible!

It would probably irritate you all to know that my heater will rarely be used if ever and my climate control is set on a steady 17 degrees C. I was hoping I could get seat coolers instead of warmers but the stealer just looked at me as though I was smoking cr@ck

Cold air initially gets directed more to the screen to keep the screen clear. As it gets up to temp it is mainly directed to the floor vents because hot air rises and this is the most effective way of getting the car warm. Although a blast of warm air from the dash vents feels like it's going to warm the car more, reality is it's just getting to your hands and face (although of course it will warm the whole car eventually). Floor vents will warm the car more thoroughly and quickly and will enable the CC to do it's job if you leave it.

A lot of people blast it through the dash then get too hot then turn down the temp and get too cold (vicious circle). Leave it at your desired temp on auto and it should do it's job.

I know that doesn't help the original poster who wants it super cool (lucky git), but just for info any of us who are still in winter.

Now the warmer weather is here, I'm not sure that my climate control is working properly. The air coming out of the vents doesn't seem as cool as I would expect or am used to from my old car.

In my old Mk1 Cupra, there was a noticeable change in the revs as the compressor was turned on and off : snowflake and no snowflake on the display. I could drive round in full sun with the windows closed and external temperatures in the high 20s with no problems.

On my FR, I don't detect a change like this as I toggle ECON on and off, although it is a diesel so I don't know if I should expect to see anything or not. I've got the temperature set to 21C but even if I turn this down, the air doesn't feel particularly chilled. Today it was 22C outside but the inside of the car was warmer than that since the sun was shining and it should be the inside temperature that matters, not the outside one. I tried with ECON on and off and I would say that I didn't actually feel any difference in temperature in the air coming out of the face level vents between the two settings. I didn't check the windscreen and footwell. The fan speed stays on full and it feels like it is just blowing air in from outside without cooling it.

AUTO is showing on the display and I haven't touched the fan speed or vents controls.

After 5 years of Mk1 ownership, I know what to expect from climate control and this certainly isn't it.

What do others think? Are you getting icy blasts from your vents?

has it got recirculate? if this is switched in it will cool the air time and time again allowing lower temps. continually taking in fresh air pushes the a/c system to its limit in hot temperatures and is unlikely to lower it to the desired level.

Never trust your displays! They are only making fun you. In fact the revs are changing but for calming down the driver you cannot see it. Same with water temperature etc.

I am now

After last weekends heatwave, I could take it no longer and booked the car in at the dealers. Apparently there was a leaking seal so there was little or no gas left.

Roll on summer....
