I had this problem with my alfa. I just cleaned inside the buterfly valve in the throtle body with an electrical contact cleaner . It had got crap round the valve and was sticking on idle, maby due to the cone air filter i had on sucking crap up.

You might be better off going to a VAG specialist mechanic. I don't know where you are but JKM in Portsmouth are excellent.
i am in manchester mate, I have taken it to a company to awesome GTI who i do trust but only the 3rd time they seen car so giving them a bit of leeway at moment, does it look as tho it could be throttle body? or something within it?

Does this happen when coming to a stop as well as idling? I had a problem on my old Polo where the revs would drop and even stall when slowing down. Turned out to be a problem with the ECU software - apparently very easy to fix. Ran like a dream after this was diagnosed. Maybe something to consider when you take it back.

Also, might be worth taking your car to another garage, that has diagnostic tools. Sometimes, a new mechanic/garage can detect a problem very quickly.
its been taken to a new garage they done all the diagnostics tests etc they even got hands dirty and took bits off and cleaned them - not seen them touch throttle body tho - had my suspisions about that as mates golf vr6 had same problems, but everytime i took it dealer they said it had nothing to do with that and its a fault - re the ECU i got it chipped on a 6 hour trial and it ran like a dream but to be honest i dont see why i should spend all that cash to fix a manufacturing error - also i dont know if faults on ecu would show up? sorry mate to these issues i am now blind as tried everything

Hi I had this exact same problem with my x plate leon cupra changed loads of bits and eventually sourced it to be the throttle body, i have a very good local VAG garage who whipped it off and cleaned it and did a re alignment through vag com and hey presto problem solved, car drove like a dream and has done 15000 miles since with not a up down rev problem in sight. I have since found out from a friend who used to work at vw in gloucester that the 1.8 t lumps are prone to this and the throttle body should be properly cleaned and re aligned every 25000 miles, good luck hope this helps.:)

Ment to say the garage charged me £40 1 hours labour to do this so i wouldnt pay much more than that if you decide to let a garage do yours for you.:D

I have this on my CupraR it started about 2 years ago in traffic. It does'nt alway occur and from time to time the revs drop down to almost stall but then jumps back up again. SMC Seat in Windsor changed the MAF but no one can fix the problem. It seems to be okay in hot weather.

Right took my car in to garage again today to get throttle body cleaned - turns out as a turbo car and not self respirting car the throttle housing is straight and not reallt much possibilty of it getting blocked uo where as on other cars (none turbo) there is a slight lip in the housing which catches most of the crap - so after and hours labour and £58 later they decided to tell me it was a boost leak and would need to book it in for bumper to be taken off and check the intercooler (which is prone to rub on the mounting bracket - causing holes) and do a full pressure text on all hoses etc - wht i have found out about the ecu it is not very good and reporting the fault of the specific problem - was reading as a dv valve again but being changed last week - means that there is a pressure drop from the throttle body to the dv valve - WHICH COULD BE ANYTHING!!!!! hopefully i dont have to spend to much money £50 a time and with no reults is not to good - altho on other hand i suppose i am gettin closer to the problem - so any updates or ideas guys/girls let me know - will keep u all posted - hope this helps you peeps with similar problems -

If it was a boost leak, would'nt it affect turbo performance after it had spooled up after 2.5K revs. At idle speed I would of throught that the turbo is idle and would'nt affect idling.

I did have a silmar problem like this on my Madza MX6 and it was traced a trottle position sensor. After 3 times at SMC seat it all checked out and i have given up. Next car will be Jap.

to be honest mate i dont really know - from wat i been told the system (whle system) needs to be pressurised other wise sensors dont operate properly - throwing things out of place etc - but we will see i will keep u posted - good look with japs - thats gonna be my next aswell i think nice evo or summet if this set thing turns pistons up -
