... but if doesn't have the torque to pull it along, power is not much use.

Ultimately, power is what matters - it is a product of torque and revs. So you can get power with high torque and low revs, or high revs and low torque.

Two very different driving experiences but if they both produce exactly the same power, the lower revving higher torqued car would not be any faster.

Torque gives the feeling of speed.

Going off the quotes above, my car IS faster even from a standing start. I recorded a 0>60 of 7.5 before the remap, and got it to 7 seconds dead with the map.

yes but whats the official quoted time of your car? Everyone seems to get better 0-60's than quoted figures.

problem is, 0.5 of a second is easy to find, or lose - for starters the speedo isn't spot on so when it says 60, its probably about 55ish. Also, its easy to miscount .5 of a sec.

Point I was making wasn't that your car is slower or faster than the GTi, just that torque doesn't make a car faster, power does. Torque just makes it feel fast.

lol sorry

as for 'my car is faster cos i did 0-60 in....'
its the old story of manufacturers providing performance figures such as 0-60 when the car has a full tank and extra weight. 206 GTi's are more than capable of 7.5 seconds 0-60 under normal driving conditions.

there really isnt that much in it. but then there really isnt that much between the 206 GTi and Seat Ibiza Cupra.. and theres an 18bhp difference and a big torque difference. the diesel will get to 100mph quicker, i dont doubt this. but 0-60..the 206 only needs to change gear once.

Lol not this again :D

torque will win :p

thats rubbish.

Sorry, but torque is only half of the story. Don't let the feeling of it fool you. (revs being the other half)

there's about 1000 variables in this - weight/driver skill/handling/grip/standing start vs rolling etc etc./ condition of car/ temperature of engine/drag coefficient the list goes on down to air pressure of tyres!

the 150 diesel is nippy because (surprise surprise) its a 150bhp car.

torquey + diesel ?

banging around in an old big steel heavy yankee pickup at the moment that only has officially 210 bhp and is a bit worn out to be honest but pulls like a train in any gear

but then it is 5.7 litres :)

 my bad.

Just get so tired of these...

everyday theres about 3 posts that degenerate from a xyz into "well a diesel has more torque so its faster" and I just wanted to add my 2p.

I guess you are sick of seeing it aswell then :cartman:

also just to add, 0-60 times were recorded by Performance GTi mag at brunts for numerous GTi 180s and they were all capable of 6.5s-7s
so 7.5s is slightly relaxed, as is 8s for the GTi

But this post always was about petrol vs diesel (TDI Vs GTI) so surely you knew what to expect?
I still say the TDI is quicker.

you're totally right.

I guess we could never have expected it stay about the actual cars involved could we.

This is what the problem is, always turns into petrol vs dervs, no matter what cars are involved. Then someone usually throws in - "ah well torque makes things fast so that settles it" or similar.

Never been impressed by the 206 GTi's performance. Spent time in a few at work.

Nice looks though. But there ya go. The only real GTi in this world is the Golf. And we all know which ones are the best.

Next door neighbour had a 205GTi, the 1.9 variant. Not only was she hot.. but she knew enough about the car to make me go, "Hey.. you're hot."

Then I got my XR2 and I'd drive past her 205 and think, "Hey, I want a race." She pretty much owned me.

Moral of the story: 205GTis are nice. But they never became the icon the Golf did.

Anyway, we should all be thankful the topic of Escort GTi hasn't arisen yet. Zzzz..

a hot neighbour with a 205 GTi?..........got any pics?

the golf is iconic, but its not as good. I'd stretch as far to even say the 205GTi was one of the best cars ever made
