is that a 4% increase in airflow or a 4% drop in air intake temperatures? the charge air is heated up when compressed by the turbo and then passed through two intercoolers so in my humble opinion i can't see why having cold air go through only to be then heated up then cooled down again is so important. does the MAF measure just airflow or the temperature of the incoming air?

Airflow.

The effectiveness of the mod'd airbox can be see by logging MAF readings of g/s of air coming in.

Mine increased a huge deal with a mod'd airbox, whilst only marginally with a BMC.

It really does work, eveyone that has done and logged the results has amazing results.

so i'm sort of right then, an increase in airflow is a good thing but it isn't vital that is cold, denser air.

4% increase in volume AND density!


the MAF measures density (IMO) so the more cold air it sucks in...


as for whether cold air going into the turbo is a good thing... of course it is!

its better for the turbo and if it didnt matter why would we have intercoolers to cool the air?! ;)

its just we dont get the sound of the BMC/DV as much! :( :rolleyes:

that is sort of what i'm getting at in an indirect way. i understand that heatsoak and high intake temps can be bad for power and cause pinking/detonation. on a n/a car its better for cold air to be directed through the filter as there isn't any intercooler to bring the temps down. but for a turbo car when you're givng it some beans the turbo gets really hot (mine glows cherry red!) so no amount of cold air would help there would it? to me (again, my humble opinion) the only effective way to reduce charge temps is either a more efficient intercooler, water injection or those spray kits for the intercoolers like evo's have.

also out of interest u got any more pics of ur engine bay, be nice to see a pic with everything insight! (the viper! ;))

i understand your thinking, but like urself im not mechanically minded enough to know tbh!

as we both know on NA engines its different, as the cold air goes through the air filter straight through the TB/inlet manifold and into the engine... rather than to a hot turbo like you said!

but all i know is as much cold air as poss is obviously the best idea! :)

The point about cold air is that because its denser, you get more of it in a smaller amount of space.

I see your point regarding temperature, its all baking in there anyway, but with colder air you're basically getting more air for your money into the system if that makes sense.

Yeh its decent size, the smaller the size, the better the suction from cold feed, from the out side

oops slip of the key, typoon nice but the viper are better in taking more air than a typhoon kit :rolleyes:

the typhoon will be like the cabrino (sp!) which sits low down by the fog light to suck in lots of cold air! (its an open cone filter too!)


makes ur DV sound good too! :yes:

hey guys

im thinking of rerouting the cold air feed to the bottom of the grill. Will this effect it in any way as the cold air feed is abit longer than before? the car air feed will point right out side, but not sure if the lenght of the pipe will effect it.

any opinions?

Best thing you can do IMHO.

When I removed my foglight and routed my air intake tube down there, I got 180g/s through my MAF. when it was pointed down, i was only gettin 170+

so wats the best suggestion? at the moment its squeezed in top section where the orignal one is, think if i face toward the front bottom grill, will i see any improvements.

is it easy to take the front grill of only? where the seat badge is.?

No not that grille, I don't think that comes off. Route it down to the foglight region and aim it out of a grille facing forward. I had to actually take out a foglight on mine as there were no empty grilles to route it out of. Your bumper is different to mine though

will that make noticable differnt from the current point i have and by facing it toward the bottom toward grill exit
