gonna probably ask a silly question here but i got 15mm spacers from auto one in my area for 8.99 so how come you guys are spending silly amounts for the same thing just different make ?

I got some Eibach spacers second hand, but they were still quite expensive IIRC.

the ones you have bought will probably rust, also won't be hub-centric and generally suck...

You pay for what you get...

BAdger's come with longer bolts aswell, i wouldn't want to put 15mm spacers on using the standard bolts:blink:

You should get hubcentric especially if you're wanting 15mm

Hubcentric means that the spacer will sit on the hub and then has a lip for the rim to sit on ( I think ! ) so this is where the force/weight is. The wheel should rest on this (why you need spigot rings) and NOT on the bolts, they are merely there to secure the wheel to the hub.

The cheapo spacers you're on about will not be hubcentric therefore meaning the wheel cannot rest on the hub, so it will only be mated to the car by the bolts which could easily shear over time.

:)

No, the whole car rolls, that's in the suspension / anti roll bars etc - the body can be made more rigid with bracing but if the suspension is too soft it will roll irrespective of how much bracing is done.

well im afraid to say that the mk4 shell is the shittest car i have ever EVER been in then cos i can physically feel the difference with and without the strut brace on.

thanks ill start reading that

Is a strut brace worth it ? Yes
Is the suspension crap on a PD130 ? Yes
Does a strut brace stop a car rolling around corners ? NO
How do you stop a car rolling around corners ? Fit an uprated ARB ( thats Anti Roll Bar for the Smee`s in the world ;) ) and fit better suspension.

Great!

Now whats the 'best' suspension set-up for handling (without going down the coilover route)?

ok i read that but i still have questions

all the calcs are based on the car not having a strut brace and then goes to say when adding a strut brace it "What a strut bar does is tie the two strut towers together so that they share the load applied at the outer tower. This gives you twice as much material to deal with the same cornering force and helps reduce fatigue stress in this area."

the second page goes on to say that whilst one is is under tension the other side is under compression (the the two towers are leaning towards each other) and i agree with that but with a brace the 2 forces have to = 0 as there linked and u cant do something to one side without doing it to the other. this is why the car doesnt roll as much. instead of being 333 lb force is now 166.5 lb force per side.

so imo i see what ur all saying about the suspension but i still stand by the fact a strut brace reduces body roll...

i know what arb is mike but my argument still stands and untill u show me hard evidence otherwise u aint gonna change my mind

body twist and flex are different to bodyroll. A strutbrace will only reduce flex and twist in the shell of the car, that may contribute in a small way to how much the shell of the car rolls but ultimately the major influence on bodyroll is down to suspension.

I think we can agree that strut braces, ARB and better suspension when combined will serve to make your car handle better and roll less.

The original point still stands though, a strut brace in itself on its own will not do anything to prevent the car rolling around on corners, it will simply help prevent the shell of the car from flexing.

You can have the stiffest shell in the world, but if you stick it on soft shocks and springs and don't have any ARB in place, it will roll around on corners like the QE2 in a rough sea :)

so smee you are actually saying that if you put high springs and soft shocks (with a strut brace) on a car it will have the same amount of roll as a car with low springs and hard shocks(with a strut brace) ???

no cos ur centre of gravity has changed

i never said not lowering the car wouldnt stop body roll my argument if u have 2 i dentical cars one with a strut brace one without the one with a strut brace will not roll as much as the one without

Now now chaps, we all know that a strut brace will only help to keep the bodyshell level! It only helps (and is notiecable) when lowered imo.

I lowered my ibiza on the standard 16's and it still flexed until I got the strut bar, only now I am upgrading to coilovers and a bigger arb.

Here's a test smee, go do a brisk drive somewhere in yours without the strut bar, then go buy a strut bar, do same route and notice the difference!! It's only 50 quid!
