Dipstick tube on 98 2.0 16v gti (ABF)

Just checked my oil and noticed that the plastic collar part of the dipstick tube has snapped in half, so that when i take the dipstick out half the orange plastic collar comes with it.

Is this easy to change, on my old VTS the tube for the dipstick was held on with one bolt and otherwise it was an interference fit.

One more thing, the engine sounds quite tappy from the exhaust manifold area, is the gasket prone to failing? or worse still the manifold prone to cracking?

If it wasnt so cold outside I'd get the tools out and investigate.

Exactly the same thing has happened to me :cry: !!! The orange tube into which you slide the dipstick has snapped in half. I have cleaned the tube with some WD-40 and than wrapped it up with some ducktape. It stopped the dipstick from flapping around but would still rather replace it.

I have tried to take it off but cant figure out how?I tried to unscrew the whole tube but I don't think that there is a thread, because it just spins around and around.

Anyone have any Ideas???

How long have you had the car? ABF engines are noisy tappy creatures at the best of times, so unless its increased noticeably i wouldnt worry too much. I had the exhaust manifold fail on my 1.4 and it didnt make it 'tappy'. Depending on the amount of time between oil changes it might just be getting ready for a flush and refill.

pulls off if i remember correctly - easy to replace

and manifolds are common - check all your engine mountings - usually the cause

Thanks for all the replies everyone, much appreciated.

I've owned the car since about July, and its always been a bit raspy under acceleration, more noticably with large throttle inputs from lowish revs in 5th, maybe when acclerating from a steady 60 ish in top gear. I would say it has increased a bit in the time i've owned it. Its the only fault the car has, so I'd like to sort it if possible.

pre4tty much, the part that you get is only half of the full tube so it clicks in. Ill see if i can find it now im home from the fookin firework display.

Stick it in some boiling water before you try to fit it - otherwise you might find you snap it trying to install it as they are very brittle (speaking from experience).

Same thing happened on my old one. The guy at my local VW garage said it was common - I gave him the engine code and he gave me the part. They use them on gold and polo's IIRC.

Getting the old snapped one off requires superman strenght though!!!
