Hey all quite new to this site this is my 1st post. Im wanting to buy a front mounted intercooler but dont have the money to fork out £700 at the moment.
is their a universal intercooler that will fit the cupra mk3 without any hassle??
And if possible could anyone tell me the BHP gains that can be made by adding a front mount??
Thanks Alot Ryan

Hi and welcome :) alot of people are fitting the renault leguna diesel intercooler to there car as it is a cheap method and is now proven to work well. Try a search in the mk3 forum.

Im just about to try something dirrerent with mine and am gettin a universal one off ebay and ordering the relevant parts i need. However there isnt alot of room at all behind the front bumper and the front grill needs to be removed and some trimming i think. Im going to try and remount my radiator back to give more room.

As for power gains im alittle unsure but does drop the intake temps from around 70 degrees to 30-40 but am sure someone will correct me if im wrong.

Im waiting on a green panel filter which i ordered from a local tuning place and they told me it was on back order. Av been waiting 2 weeks for it now. I hate waiting aswell. Well you shud post up a fitting guide when you do get round to fitting would be nice to see it.

0k cheer guys for the replys.so ur saying just save the pennys and get the forge one?

The leguna one works just as well as the Forge one.. it's a lot cheaper I think it's around the £150 marker (not 100% sure on that) but they are a fair amount of work to fit... becuase they are not designed to fit a Ibiza...

At the end of the day mate it's your choice... if you don't have the cash but don't mind doing a bit of hard work then the leguna is fine....

If you've got the cash or don't mind waiting till you've got the cash then the forge...

There has been loads of threads about this and it's all down to what you want and can afford... If you are thinking of getting stage 2 maps then you'll need a FMIC if your not then you can keep the SMIC, until you're ready to go to the next level....

and you dont gain bhp by adding an fmic...you release it ;)[/QUOT

An intercooler does actualy increase HP. In Theory every degree cooler the air enters the intake system its actually equal to 1hp. Can any 1 else out there back me up on this...:)

Hmmm, I'm not sure.
I'd say with a standard SMIC you'll probably get a decent run in say 3rd/4th gear and then heatsoak will start to take it's effect (dependant on boost levels).
A FMIC will obviously control intake temps much more efficiently, allowing the car to produce roughly the same amount of torque over and over again, over more of a sustained period. If anything I'd say a FMIC will increase torque (not necessarily peak HP, though). Only my take on things, not exactly matter of fact :)

SO it stops you loosing bhp is what you mean

and I think it's a ratio of 3C to 1bhp (and that's vague)

But when driving theres plenty of air flow through the front of the car so there will be little heat soak. More boost equals more HP as long as the turbo is operating within its effeicency island, and then as you increase boost it produces more heat so you need the cooler to keep temps down so you can achieve more hp and torque. :p

Again not necessarily............

When I first had my KO3S fitted I was still on the standard SMIC. On Jabba's rollers the car made 236bhp/250lbft (and lots of work keeping it cool). 6 months later once I had the Forge FMIC fitted and the car made 234bhp/280lbft (obviously some tweaking done within the mapping as well). Different days and time of the year, granted but as a guide it just shows the difference in torque rather than outright HP :) :p

yup - makes sense

the forge let you run more boost (hence torque low down), but the turbo was still maxxed out at ~235ishbhp

Yes i agree with you there, different times of YEAR = different ambient tempetures. And i can imagine they had a hard time keeping it cool. Fans cannot reproduce the reality of what you would get whilst driving along a motorway/road. If calculations where done while driving you would have seen more of an increase i reckon. Car manufactuers do not use rolling roads, they do road test's. :p
