I still think the "theme" of the reviews is about the same as when the LCR arrived on the scene. It was pitched against the Focus RS, Audi S3 and the like and it was very rarely voted as the outright winner. The thing is though, people like myself bought them and loved their all round ability. I am sure I will be doing the same with the new Cupra. If you put together all the positive comments in the various reviews, it does once again point towards a good all rounder. Not sure why journos are moaning that it doesn't feel that quick or powerful. How many hot front wheel drive cars have been ruined by torque steer? The VXR for one isn't so nice in that department. The Focus ST is very clever - listening to that glorious engine makes you forget that its styling is a little bit Halfords and the wheels remind me of probably the worst ones TSW made - the Venoms!! I work hard for my money and I would feel very smug if I got more for it with a Cupra than a Golf GTi. The couple of grand saved on getting a like for like spec could be well spent on subtle mods (Revo etc).
The only thing that I am a little puzzled by is the delay in arriving in the UK. If this results in a better car, then I will be happy. It is mentioned as a black chin spoiler in some PR material. Perhaps it was still on the back seat when the press drove the cars as per LCR!!!

Who thinks the Cupra looks best and who prefers the Aerokit, based purely on looks? Have SEAT made the right decision?

still can't help thinking SEAT are maybe missing out on some of the hot hatch market a bit with only offering a 5 door.
as a "neutral",it looks head and shoulder better than the rest (vxr second),its going to handle pretty darn well and has the tuneablility to make it go like a scolded cat.
but maybe they are aiming it away from baseball capped drivers by adding the back doors. 2 door cupra R in a years time?

I can't see a 3dr ever being produced. Has never been seen to be needed before and that was the whole point of styling the car like it is - to do away with the need to have a 3 door. It's not something you could do with the current bodystyle and I think if they were to re-design the costs would outrun the sales
The new Leon like the old Leon looks really good as a 5 door. And would look crap IMO as a 3 door. Now the Golf and Astra look much better as a 3 door, and the Focus looks crap as either 3 or 5 door.
My local dealer just ordered a demo Cupra today he told me. Hopes to get it in shortly (not sure when though).

And why isnt the Cupra as tunable? Its looking fairly positive that its sporting a K04 turbo now, ala S3, so possibly upto 300hp capable. And what folks forget is whats standard on the SEAT, will cost thousands more to add to the Golf, spec a Golf GTI to the same spec.
Focus ST is comparable actually again if you consider spec, its much like an ST2 or ST3, which is broadside of £19k.
As always down to personal choice, some will like, some won't.

If i had 10 grand spare i'd get one asap maybe a neice ex-demo full extras in a years time
looks great tunable to over 240bhp, great brakes, same chassis as golf.
under 20 grand is about right imo you wouldn't expect to pay 16-18 for the spec and quality/performance. also the Cupra name is getting stronger and stronger.

I will be in the same position, looking at getting one a year old...can anyone predict what the price will be for a 12mnth old one ?
You are forgetting that when the Cupra R was originally launched in it's 210 BHP guise it was a significant £3,000 cheaper than the Focus RS and approx £5,000 cheaper than the S3...It was a performance bargain. It performed and handled better than the Golf GTi MKIV on which it was based and you got a lot more kit.
This new Cupra is more expensive than a Focus ST2 and not that far off a Golf GTi. It doesn't look mean like the old Cupra R looked (From the front) and the interior is pretty horrendous
Having sat in one at the British Motor Show and now reading the road-tests, I am glad I bought a 2nd hand Focus ST3. It might not look pretty, but it's loverly to drive.
