Winter tyres

What about cheaper alternatives? I know they wont be as good but surely they are better than the standard tyres?
Yes, I'm sure anything in the "performance winter" category would be a big improvement over summer tyres when the roads are cold and wet. Have you already got spare wheels or will you be buying a package? There's a decent offer on packages inc OEM alloys from Tyremen in Hull at the moment. :)

Mine are going on this afternoon if I can summon the energy! ;)

i'm toying with the idea of putting some winter tyres on the Cupra, normally i wouldn't skimp on the tyres i put on but i'm thinking about fitting some winter Kuhmo's. They don't seem to get too bad of a write up, yes they are not as good as some of the bigger brands but as a guess i would think they would out perform summer Pirrelis .. has anyone tried them ? it doesn't help that i have to have 18's.

You'll have no probs with 18s even with the wide profile in snow etc. Any winter tyre will excel over summers in cold conditions. Camskill have the hankook ice bear available cheap in 225/40/18 format, and they do have good reviews. No idea on the kumhos.

Just remember not to drive enthusiastically on them under any circumstances as the handling will be criminal, remember why you're putting them on.

I want to get some winter tyres this year, this is a very interesting thread! I'm going to go for some cheaper ones (£100 per corner) and fit them to my standard 17" rims. Even cheap-ish cold weather must be better than summer tyres in the cold/snowy/slushy roads this winter!

I am just deciding which size to get, the standard tyres are 225/45/17, would I be best getting 215/50/17 or stay with the standard size?

I would recommend a second set (on steelies if due to cost) or fleabay for some OE rims.

If steelies then drop a size i.e 16's. Its preferrable to drop the width too slightly.

I'd rather not have steelies because of the looks, and OE rims, even cheap ones, are more than I'd like to spend. My budget is £400 and I just want to be a bit safer when the snow and slush starts because I drive 35miles each way to work on a mixtures of A/B roads and motorways.

Do I need to increase my budget?

You can buy a set of 'Starfishes' for £100 on ebay now (some will want more i.e. condition, tyres that are on them).

So for £500 I reckon you should be alright. Don't forget its not a sunk cost either, you're just bringing the cost of rubber forward and making the summers last longer.

Chopping and changing tyres on existing rims isn't cheap either. Two sets all the way.

On both the Pug and the Leon I have OE rims on both sets. The Honda stays on summers and off the road when its bad.

OK thanks! I saw those starfishes - I think I prefer them to the newer FR rims anyway! I think I'll do the business once I get paid in November!

GainfulShrimp - that looks like quite a good deal, but I would ideally like to stick with 17s. Fancy some starfishes anyway.

I've been researching and "Marangoni Meteo HP" are reasonable at around £95 a corner, anybody had experience of these tyres? I've not heard of Marangoni before!

Yup, it's getting cold so they're pricey. And the bigger sizes are always expensive. The price you pay for excellent stopping power with the cupra's brakes. :( Too late for this year, but they're always cheaper during the summer...

I reckon Marongoni are sold by KwikFit as mid-range long life tyres. Dunno how good they are?

Just think of the increased safety, cost and hassle of insurance claims due to crashing and tyres will last 30,000 miles +
