Where To Find Engine Code?

Hi All,

I'm sure this has been asked before but searching didn't bring anything useful up.

My car's due its yearly service soon and I'm going to do it myself but I can't seem to find the engine code anywhere in the bay to make sure I'm getting the right parts.

The car is a 2001 Leon 1.6 16V S

Edit: Where's the best place to buy a oil and an oil filter from? I've used Eurocarparts before and been fairly impressed with their service.

I'm going to change the brake fluid while I'm working on it as it doesn't seem to have been done on any of the car's previous services for some reason.

Is it worth upgrading to braided hoses (while I'm checking the brake pads) or am I unlikely to notice any difference?

Anything else I should be checking/replacing while I'm at it?

Thanks for any advice!

can't speak for the 1.6 but on mine it has a sticker on the cam belt cover with the engine code andit's stamped on the cylinder head
Best place would be the dealers for filter cheapest place prob ECP or local motor factors, make sure you change the fuel filter at the same time.
Braided hoses will give a slightly stiffer pedal feel

The fuel filter was done a couple of thousand miles ago so I think I'm going to leave that till the next service, only changing the oil beacuse it's a year since it was last done...

Cheers for the advice :)

According to the Golf/Bora Haynes manual the engine code can be found stamped on the block, stamped on the cylinder head lifting lug and there's apparently an engine code sticker on the cylinder head, to the right of the right hand coil pack when looking from the front.

This post is referring to the lifting lug location on the 1.8T so not sure if this is applicable to yours but the Haynes doesn't specify that the above locations vary on different engines.

Hi,
The engine code is on a sticker on the cambelt cover, or it will be in the service book on a sticker or may also be on a sticker in the boot by the spare wheel. It will be a three letter combination - e.g - AZD.
I would use a genuine oil filter from either a SEAT dealer or VW dealer, as they are only about £4 and have a special non-return valve in them which some cheaper non-genuine ones don't.
As for the oil, I would use either a good semi synthetic or fully synthetic oil, SEAT and VW do a quantum range which I use.
If your car has done 60k upwards, I would check the cam belts and tensioners for cracks, as these are common to fail.
Best regards,
Jochen.

Luckily my cam belt has been done but I might take the cover off just to check it.

I'll take the engine cover off tomorrow and check under there, it's bound to be written somewhere.

Looks like I need to make a trip to the dealer to pick up a filter and some oil then...

Thanks people.

Hey, your code will be either AZD (as above), AUS or BCB.
I use a local parts factor's company or look up a GSF (German, Swedish, French).
Also look into changing your water pump if you are changing the cam belt anyway and keeping the car.
The cleanest and easiest place to find the code is in the spare wheel well of the boot
