In German PD is short for Pumpedüse, CR is short for Common rail. Both are based on a different technique to inject diesel in the cylinders. The only thing that is worth knowing is that the pd has only one plus and that is the way it delivers power all the rest is in favour of the CR with it's reliability as one giant advantage.

Warwickshire once.
CR is facelift cars PD is all pre facelift iirc.

Don't be put of by the PD. The reliability is not generally an issue as its the same engine used in VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda.

Go for the cr if you do alot of start stop driving. If it's more motorway driving then the pd engine will be fine. But do expect some problems if it's more than 4 years old

I'm going to be doing 600miles a week which are all motorway so won't be much stop start. what year is facelift?

its funny really. The amount of problems flying about with the pd's. I have a 56 plate fr tdi which ive had for 20 months and i live 2 miles from work so a lot of stop start. Also had it mapped and never missed a beat. Does regen occasionally but cant fault it. Think what i am getting at is that it is a bit of luck wether you get a good one or not.

Well everyone has they're own opinions. I can say I don't do alot of miles.

Had the car since dec '10 and from then. The injectors had gone, several door latches, regen not doing what it should, pair of rear shockers gone.

I would say that that is alot of problems. But hey, it could be just my luck?

It's funny how the odd person who might have had a bad experience with a car will advise people new into the "scene" to "avoid it like the plague!". Or recently, even avoid the marque altogether

Just because you have had your own bad experience with your car, doesnt mean its a bad car and others shouldnt go near it. While you represent 1 person, there will be thousands of people who also drive the same model (PD170 in this case), who love the car, and would highly recommend one (including me). ;)

I've owned mine for 3 years so far (07 plate), only had a DPF sensor need replacing. Just last night driving home from work, it reminds me why I love the car so much - plus the Leon looks great too, compared to other "bland" looking cars on the roads...

EDIT: Plus for a few here who have had a whole handful of mechanical failures, sounds like you've bought a right "Lemon". I've never had all those those go wrong in ALL my 15 odd years of motoring! lol. :p

I like the way some comments are exaggerated. No one mentioned anything like avoid like the plague. Or saying the car is bad. FYI I still own the car and had no problems so far after the initial ones ironed out. But I like the way you assume.

The way you say in all my 15 years of motoring. Yet you've only had this car for 3 years. Does that mean you know everything??? :D Lemon or not all cars have problems and it's good to know what they are.

Buying a pd170 would mean buying second hand. So I would guess that would be usefull info to know. If you buy the cr then more and likely be newer and possibly have more warranty left on it. Btw I hope your injectors go! Haha :p

Been driving for around 15 years. In that amount of time, having owned say 10 cars, I've never had anything like "injectors had gone, several door latches, regen not doing what it should, pair of rear shockers." - let alone all on the same car! Very unfortunate is what I mean.

How about this....

I looked to getting rid of the car over a space of 1 year, in which time i said it was ****, will stillsay its **** and it has completly put me off buying another Vag car again.

^ thats in the posters opinion. Based on just ONE car. ;)

I've owned my current Leon FR for the last 3 years. Sorry if you are so easily confused. ;)

now now gentlemen... put your keyboards down... what sort of impression must you be giving of this mild mannered forum to newbies anyway !? :p

Dave_W... The difference between the PD and CR is the way in which the fuel (diesel) is pushed into the engine. They are both 2ltr in capicity but i am not sure if they are different engines. The CR is known as being a cleaner burning engine, is slightly more frugal and less aggresive in it power delivery (which probably explains the mpg thing to be honest). They both make the same standard power though and will deliver the same levels of performance.

Which you go for depends on what you want and what you can afford. No offence to the pre face lift owners but my preference is the FL CR FR, it will have existing manufacturer warranty as they should all be within 2 years old, imo the FL has a nice interior and aside from the less aggressive front end looks better overall.
