Vinyl wrap roof...Help!!

i considered trying to fit the vinyl from teh centre out, leaving the edges with the backing on.
then lay them where i want them, cut them carefully with the backing acting as a protection to the paintwork,
then peeling and finishing.

is this likely to make a right mess? chances of getting crap under the edges while working on them i guess??

i just dont want to go near the paintwork with a scalpel...
