Very Strange Coolant Temperature Readings

I thought option 51 on the climate control was oil temp.

Even when I changed the temperature sensor I got different readings.

Even after I changed the CTS to a brand new genuine one it still completely varied from the temperature on the dash.

There are also threads on here where people have said option 51 is oil temp.

Climate control system doesn't need to know oil temperature, and very few cars have an oil temperature sensor fitted. Climate control very definitely needs to know the coolant temperature.

Well today got auto protect warranty to cover my thermostat that's getting fitted tomorrow. But I thought I would wait and see what happens after that! as I'm sure my CTS is naffed. Tested it many times today. Basically the CTS "with the climate control screen" reads 40 or less every time I turn it off even if i drove hrs, it will turn off/on around 30-40 and seems to choke each time to. Although its hot and the needle says 90 also takes the CTS 2-3 miles to get to 90 again to..

Will let you know what happens after new thermostat but I'm 75% sure i need temp sensor too, going by the climate control CTS readings

What needs replacing when the needle's moving about but it's on constant 90 on the CC?

That is 95% thermostat i would say 100% but there is something that has not been fully cleared up here. So please lets clear this up a little bit for other users.

Ok got an update for you all

Today I had my new thermostat and CTS climate control sender replaced. As above my needle did move down/up but not very often so I replaced it anyway.

Now what needs clearing up is the fact that after I replaced the temp sender it still reads the f same as the other 1 lol.

So i don't know what is normal I'm hoping i don't have to make another thread and we can clear this up with this 1..

Right new thermostat has deffo made a difference the needle seems like it uses the turbo and gets warm allot faster.

The CTS will still read 30-40 every time the engine is switched off with the needle reading 90. Is this normal or what can some of you go check please. you will need to make sure its fully warmed up then turn it off leave for a minute or a few start back up look at the climate control CTS readings let us know please.

How to check this!

Accessing On-Board Diagnostic codes with climate control
Press and hold the recirculation button. Then press the manual flow control up arrow. You should see a 1c. Press the temperature up ("+") or down ("-") buttons to select a code number. Then press the recirculation button again. The value should display. Press the temperature up or down button again to display another code.

You want code 51c
for a full list of codes look here http://lee69.co.uk/Car stuff/Leon/codes.txt

Would appreciate some help with this since its looking like a wasted £25 on the CTS

Not sure what's going on tbh as the CTS is split into two signals one for the ECU and one for the dash gauge.
The CC gets it signal from the ECU.

Might have to check this with your car adam m8 if that's ok :< Sux as its been like this since I bought it from the forecourt.

I hope its normal . Needs to be warm to test this as both mine get there fast from cold! its only when I turn the engine off for 5 mins and then restart it the sender not needle will start from around 30-40 and climb back up as said above.

Thanks lee much appreciated.

I forgot to do it but a pm of Binksy reminded me too ;)

Car was parked up for an hour after a dual carriageway 30 mile run and it read 66 on the CC.

When i left it to come home, 2 hours after i checked it at 66, was reading 15 and driving home i left it on the CC and when my dash said 90 deg the CC was saying 60, and then increased up to 90.

Yup thanks for the tests lee m8

If it was a little clearer before "ie more posts with explanations lol" would of known my CTS was ok but least its a new shiny one now :).

Ok here is the outcome of the tests I have done!

My issue was that every time I turned my engine off and then got back in and started her up my needle was allot higher than my CTS reading from my CC unit. So i did some tests.

Short journeys:
Even with your needle and CTS saying 90s if you switch your engine off "even for short amount of time say 10 mins" The CTS will prob start around 30 and climb back up were as your needle will still prob say 90 or be allot higher! this is fine! "so it seems"

Longer Journeys:
If you drive miles over 30 "this was my test" to get it warmed up proper you could turn your car off/on and it will read 90s on both."well should" 30 mins later and the CTS will still read high values like 60s and your needle most likely would show around 90s, the CTS will climb back up once again.

The needle seems to take longer to go down, you could leave you car 30 mins + and chances are it would be close to or strait back to 90. However you CTS on your CC display will most likely show less than your needle. If you leave you car upto 1hr the CTS would prob start around 40 this all depends on how hot you car is/was. The longer the journey the hotter it will become and the CTS will read high values when switched on/off for a period of time.

I do mostly short journeys so my CTS was always reading 30-40 each time I stop even if it was for 10 mins. After my tests and asking lee to make a couple himself I'm convinced this is indeed normal. So be careful before you go out and by a new CTS like me lol.

My TIPS:
The CTS reading "on the CC" should climb to 90c as should your needle from cold.

From cold If your needle does not beat your CTS/CC to temperature you prob need a new thermostat as my CTS never beets the needle "from cold". Specially now I have a new thermostat its so much faster to get to 90s.

If driving and the CTS says 90 and you see your needle move down then up again this prob means you need a new thermostat.

Hope this helps others. [B)] If you can understand it lol

Right... Changed the thermostat... Sort of improved it... Now the needle just dilly dallys about up to 90, then stays there. It begins goin up when the climate control says 60 ish, then up and down, up abit more, down until 90. Iv ran it with expansion cap off and squeezed the pipes i can reach. Does this still sound like an air lock or do i have other issues?

When I mentioned this to my dealer last year he suggested it was a dashboard problem. I was sceptical to say the least.
