Here is a pic I took when replacing the TIP:
Is it me, or do some of the blades look deformed?

Holy crap, yeh that looks pretty goosed to my untrained eye too.
Could have been foreign materials entering the inlet what with your TIP being split at the turbo end, maybe.
In any case, you're looking at either getting a brand new turbo (£££lots), reconditioned one on exchange basis (£££bit less) or sending yours off to get rebuilt (£least maybe).
Turbo Dynamics have a bit of a sale on atm and AET turbos have some offers on VAG turbos too.Got to be worth a look.

if its still working, run it to the ground, thats what i'd do, mine sounds the same but performs fine.
You risk bits of impeller breaking off and wrecking the head/pistons if you do that.You will need a new one anyway, so why risk adding an engine rebuild onto that bill?
As he stated it isn't working properly so must be replaced. It would cost the same if not more to have the turbo repaired so you might as well get one of the turbos Bill is selling. You can always sell this one for spares or repair.
Sorry to bring up an old thread guys, but I have a quick question regarding a similar problem...
Noticed a drop in power and the token hair dryer noise while driving the other day. Then, after looking for a boost leak somewhere, I noticed that my TIP had popped off at the bottom.
Now my question is, am I okay to simply pop it back on and carry on as normal or is there something else I need to do/check as part of the routine???

Incase anyone has the same symptoms, here are a few pics of the split intake pipe:
Can this type of damage cause my engine to use more oil than usual? Im having the problem described over here on this thread when the turbo sounds like a distant police siren/supercharger at low RPM's :-( what does this mean?? i'd be so grateful for any help..
I had the police siren type noise and high oil usage on my old turbo when it was dying. The oil usage is caused (as I understand it) because one of the seals has gone and is causing oil to leak through the exhaust.

So as a result of this my catalyst most likely is stuffed? What is the TIP and where do i locate it? Sorry, I dont understand the technical english so much..
Recently got som fault codes on o2 sensor bank 1 and my car had some rough idling.. Possibly anything to do with this?

TIP = Turbo Intake Pipe. It runs down from the air filter box to the turbo. It's a bit difficult to reach but it is held on to the turbo with a circular hose clip. Undo that and pull the pipe away from the the turbo. Reach inside the turbo inlet where the hose was, you should find the compressor wheel. Hold the shaft of the wheel with your fingers and check if it's possible to move it in and out of the turbo. It shouldn't move any more than a tiny, tiny amount, less than a millimeter. Any more than that and you will need the turbo replaced or reconditioned.
