Morning All,

I am getting a very strange whining sound coming from my turbo today, it sounds like a small supercharger!!! I last drove the car about 5 days ago and it was fine.

I have also noticed that there is a loss of power.

Can anyone shed any light on this? Is my turbo on it's way out? Or possible leak somewhere? I have vag-com but got no clue what to log etc as I am fairly new to using it.

Its an LCR by the way, if that helps.

Cheers

I had exactly the same issue after fitting a cheap DV, spring was soo hard it gave turbo surge and air bent the turbine blades in my turbo, I had about 75% power and a wheezing noise... Have you been near the Intake at all doing any fixes etc?

Does it sound like a distant police siren?

It slightly resembles a police siren I guess, more like a quiet supercharger if that makes any sense

I installed a Forge 007p a few months back so there should be no problem with that. I am getting around 75% power too I would say. Not been near the intake at all

LOL, the old police siren noise.. I hope its not that as it means new turbo!

I'm hoping I don't need a new turbo but if it's that serious then there is only one solution....bigger turbo time!!!! ;)

This might be a daft question but is there any way of confirming that the turbo is going to be needing replaced?

Any tests that can be done etc?

I don't want to be purchasing a new unit if not needed, but at the same time I don't want to be damaging anything further by running it.

Going to be keeping the rev's below 2500rpm to use the turbo as little as poss

Cheers

Take the inlet pipe off and look at the blades on the turbo, see if anything is obviously damaged, try and wiggle the shaft up and down and in and out, if it moves alot it's goosed.

Thanks Rob I will give that a try later on tonight.

Hoping it's something less serious but it's not seeming likely!

Sounds like turbo problem to me too - can you hear it at idle or very low RPM at all? Does the sound rise and fall along with engine RPM?

Check oil usage too, if it's turbo seals the car will likely be consuming oil.

You can only hear it when the turbo spools up, nothing at idle.

The sound seems to be there during acceleration but goes away when you release the throttle.

I will check oil levels too.

Ok I just tried revving the car on the spot and the noise occurs when above 2000rpm and when removing the throttle, its like a hairdryer sound (If you can imagine a hairdryer being switched on for a couple of seconds and then off again) Nice sound description I know

Does the turbo actually spool up when revving on the spot?

I only gave short bursts up to maybe 4000rpm on then throttle off

Ok I drove the car home from work, initially the noise was there but after a while it seemed to go away?!

Serious lack of power now though, the turbo seems to spool up a bit but not fully.

Does this still suggest a dodgy turbo? Or possibly a boost leak?

Also getting this fault on Vag-Com:

17705 - Pressure Drop between Turbo and Throttle Valve (check D.V.!)
P1297 - 35-00 - -

Here are the logs from VAG-COM from block 32:

Any ideas?? Do these negative values suggest a leak somewhere? Perhaps a cracked turbo?

hmmm check for leaks.

if turbos seals/bearings have gone, it will have excessive play in and out as well as the usual up and down..

Just carried out a visual check and the bottom of the TIP was completely split (about 3/4 of the way around)!! I will try to get a picture up at some point

What is the verdict on a Forge TIP? Any good? Needing a suitable replacement (upgraded of course ;))
