Thoughts on the Leon 1.2 TSI 110 SE Dynamic Technology

I'm planning to switch my VW Polo 1.2 TSI 90 SE Design for a new car and have been following the launch of the new Ibiza with great interest.

However I've noticed there are some really good deals on the Leon SE Dynamic Technology with the 1.2 TSI 110 engine and was wondering what people think of this engine and trim level? Is the engine powerful enough for the Leon and how does it do with fuel economy?

I've got the 1.2 TSI 110 SE with tech pack and it's certainly quicker than the Polo. It's no flying machine, but you can get in the 40s mpg round the doors. Boot size was the winner for me, also the ability to transport my mother in law and her wheelchair (shame there's no ejector seat)

Thanks! It's the extra boot space that's attracting me as well. Will see if any of my local dealers have one available for a test drive.

I'd suggest/recommend the 1.4 150 ACT, it's fast and very economical. My avg over 3000 miles is around 50 mpg .

I had the model you're looking at for about 6 months then I chopped it in for the 1.4 eco tsi fr as I got very bored very quickly. That's just my opinion though and I had come from a Astra cdti 1.9 Sri mapped to 190bhp so the downfall in power was a serious issue for me.

As far as I know, if you are getting the facelifted version of this, it does not come with LED lights, but all the other goodies like Sat Nav, no parking sensors too as standard.

If you predominatly drive in the city, and roads are flat, it's a good choice. As others say, very spacious (can even fit 3 resonably sized adults in the back seat), plenty of leg room in the back too (unless the front seat passengers are 1.90m plus), and the boot is massive for what it is. You probably can get high 40s/low 30s (mpg) on a light to medium traffic city routes. On 40-50 mph dual carriageways probably low 50s (mpg), and highway @ 70mph, I'm guesing high 40s/low50s (mpg), if you are relatively gentle with the throttle.

If you always do highways...or fast single/dual carriageway/hilly terrain, well lets say you will appreciate the 1.4 150 or 2.0TDI better.

I myself have a 110 PS Ibiza DSG (3 doors), city, excellent, 40-50 mph dual carriageways, excellent. Highways and hilly terrain, not so excellent.

My opinion would be that the car will feel underpowered. I have the 1.6TDi which produces the same power, but crucially 250Nm torque vs 175Nm for the 1.2TSi. It will feel like it does not have any 'go' due to the lack of torque, making the the mid-range feel weak. As above, go for a 1.4 petrol (250Nm) if you can.

However, why not stick with the new Ibiza if budget will stretch that far? A lighter car that is only a little smaller than the Leon, with the 'new' 1.0TSi engine putting out more more power and torque (in 85KW version) than the 1.2TSi engine in the Leon. I was surprised just how big the new Ibiza is when I saw it in the showroom next to a Leon.

I had the 1.2 TSI as a rental and I found it surprisingly fast and agile, but went for the 1.4 150 ACT to be sure :D

I just read your previous car was 1.2 90PS Polo. If then, you will probably find that the 1.2 110PS engine will 'feel' similar in terms of go with the Polo if not marginally quicker in most cases (at least judging by their comparative 0-100 times).

And yes Ibiza with that 1.0 TSI (higher power one) is pretty nippy...(ok not as fast as a 2.0TDI 150 Leon I used to have), but it's not what I would call slow or wanting for power.

I thought this to begin with but a few dual carriageway slip roads and overtakes later I was desperately seeking more power. I'd get my 1.4 mapped now too if it wasn't for the warranty and that's not exactly slow (not a rocket ship either mind)

I have the 1.2 SE (110) pre facelift and find it's good for me, nippy enough for a quick getaway and overtakes fine. I get about 50mpg and that is mixed town/country/carriageway driving. Test drive is the way to go but i've no issues with my one.

Just collected my 2014 1.2 TSI DSG ST se tech last weekend.

MPG does wonder. Full air con, mixed driving, some m25, north and south circular start stop. So far over 140 miles, i refuelled bk to top and i used around 12L. The trip computer says average 51.1mpg and my calculations say 51.0mpg. So pretty good so far. But yes. Quite underpowered. From standstill its ok. It has enough torque to get out of T junctions or roundabout without hair raising feeling. But overtake needs quite some pre-thinking. Put into S mode helps abit. But...i think its quite opposite to "effortless driving".

I normally drives bmw 22xe. So ...yes fair abit of difference in power :p

EDIT: forgot add. I also tried the same ona golf SV. That was even worse, to the extend i think its unsafe. But then again thats a heavier car. I actually think even the golf sv 1.4 is equally underpowered from standstill. Hence i went with leon st instead.

Thanks all, had a good look at the Leon and the new Ibiza at my local dealership and decided the Ibiza is big enough for my needs. Test drove the Ibiza and really liked it so will be placing an order in the next few days.

Which engine you going for? 1.0 75PS, 1.0TSI 95PS or 1.0TSI 115 PS? Or dare I say, the 1.5 EVO?
