sump sealant

hi, just a quick question.
i want to drop my sump to check the oil pick up pipe gauze as its coming up for 120,000 and never been checked. phoned seat for price on the sealent and they gave me a price of £18+vat!!!!!
can use the normal black Silicone from halfords which is only a fiver??
or is the main agent sealant different..

I've used normal black sealant both times I had my sump off and have had no issues. Remember to keep it as close to the outer edge as possible to avoid getting any in the sump and blocking your oil pickup :)

well its not tiger seal . its a all round sealent from my local motor factors but i guessed it was the same kinda stuff , its just a general black sealent? and btw tiger seal is pretty flexiable had some on my arches on my mk3 golf and managed to get them off again without much force.

thanks for your comments, done it today and wish i didnt!!!!!
sump came off no problem 1 stud was missing but thought hay ho its not leaking!
cleaned every thing up put it back up and then i cross threaded the worst one to get at the one by the bell housing!!! wasnt going to take it all back down again so thats 2 missing but still not leaking!! fingers crossed it wont either.....
deffo wont be taking the sump off again!:cry:

pretty much clean as a whistle same goes for he sump....only checked it as i was getting a tappety sound from the engine all the time and saw some feeds saying could be blocked guaze starving the head of oil but not in this case,think just worn tappets..

I think when I smashed my sump of recently the quote I got from the garage for seat dealer sump sealant was £23, luckily my garage also offers non branded/main deal sealant which they did for £9.
Not super cheap, but a crap load better than the alternative!

i used loctite black silicon sealent defo good stuff and only just over a fiver from halfords!:D

My Sump has 2 studs missing also which where not there when i took the sump off. All sealed back up and studs loctite'd back up. 2day and no oil leaks . tbh wouldnt have thort id have any! Also ive got the tappet sounds also if you shed any light on it give me a pm
