Stuck actuator on vnt turbo

Basically I have limp mode issues that have been happening ever since I had the car over a year

It's only recently I got round to investigating properly, it turns out my actuator rod doesn't move at all, so I think I have the dreaded sticky vnts :( it's been on vag com and giving positive charge deviation codes

My turbo works upto about 2500 rpm then just cuts out untill I restart the engine, I have tried to take the back pipe off the egr to access the manifold above the turbo however the nuts are seized and now rounded thanks to me :/ so I'm pretty sure the oven cleaner method from the top of the manifold is out the window?

It's a 1.9tdi Leon ml1 03 plate on a alh engine code (90)

Any suggestions? I'm looking for a financial solution of course I don't fancy swapping turbos as a second hand one is gonna set me back a hundred rocks and there still no guarentee I could get the same problem again after as much as 2k depending on the turbo condition :/

Shame you rounded the nuts

Think a 12 or 13mm socket on a 1/2" drive would have got it no bother

The mr muscle works a treat

What do u recon? Save myself a few bob an try some molgrips?

They are seriously seized I tried a screwdriver, a hammer, wd40, 12 socket, followed by bashin a 11 socket on, it's that stuck, it's just rounded off

Get yourself a set of these from screwfix

They work a treat for the exhaust downpipe nuts

Once the downpipe is off spray the turbo full of Mr Muscle oven cleaner

Leave it in there for a couple of hours and while it's working, go out now and again and work the vnt lever

I got a long screw driver onto it from the top and did it that way. A mirror and torch is very useful too.
The Mr Muscle treatment works superb and it's like having a new turbo, perfect function, more poke down the bottom and no overboost.

i keep getting tempted by doing this mr muscle treatment but i dont have any overboost issues just a small amount of lagg lower down although its a normal amount of lagg so i know i shouldnt do it being as it will be fixing somthing that isnt broken.

i have cleaned VNTs many times. the best way is to open the turbo and clean it like that.

Have you tried the Mr Muscle method? I hear what you're saying and I was sceptical but it's worked great so far so we'll see how long it lasts.

Thanks for all the advice how much does that set cost btw and how does it work? I don't see how they'd be any different from puttin a smaller socket?

I too am quiet skeptical but if it saves me a few hundread I'm willing to try it,

Can I just ask a question tho, mr muscle stuff is flammable is this not a danger goin into the turbo? I don't wana be blowing half my street up! Lol

Ok brilliant I was just looking on flee bay at a few sets

I'm pretty sure that the but size originally is 12mm on the top of the egr manifold?

Would that set u list above be suitable? As they jump from 10-13mm, I don't even think that the size is metric as the 12 rounded the but and the 11 was too small,

Also I need a new bolt what size is it so i can b&q it lol or go to my local hardware and ask for two new screws

I think those ones are splines, the ones for holding the exhaust down pipe on are 12mm hex though and yes that set does the trick. That nut in the pic is one I took off my exhaust downpipe

What did u do? Put the 10mm on the 12?

Also does anyone have a good guide for this I have one saved from briskoda (googled it) but its a little hazzy on the part when putting the cleaning hose in, it doesn't really show anything and obviously I want to put it in the right place lol

When you take off the down pipe just spray it in there till it's full, might need a WD40 nozzle and a bit of tubing but that's where it goes. It's tricky because the can needs to be upright to work, where gloves and get stuck in, you'll figure it out.

Sorry to bring this issue up again! The nut that sits on top of the egr manifold, does anyone know what but this is? A d is it car specific? All I know it is 12mm but once the nuts off it ain't going back on and need a replacement,
