Squeaking when pulling away

Hi all,

Spent the morning reading up on the millions of threads a search threw up... and im now worrying myself stupid (as you do when you read lots of horrible threads lol)

My car has started make a squeaking noise when i pull away... its not for long... its litterally until the car goes about idle... if i keep it there and pull away and stay at that speed it continues to squeak until i increase the pressure on the pedal.

Now, after reading... im now worried it is the cambelt or the tensioner... how likely is this? The car hasnt had one for 4years, but has always been maintained by VAG specialists... and they never said it needs it... im still something like 20k shy of "needing" one perse.

I was hoping it was the alternator belt personally....

i think i already know what you guys are going to say, but wanted the be 100% certain before i look at pricing a cambelt change..

With the car idling, spray the aux belt with wd40, if the noise goes, there's the problem. Also try the power steering belt if it's seperate. It's worth a shot just incase and can help rule it out but be careful and don't where anything dangley while you try it. Keep your hand back and just spray it from a distance, preferably with the straw attachment.

i havent managed to get to spray the belt yet... but it's doing it a bit more now... is this a sign that something is failing?

Me and a mate listened to it when doing it (took it in turns to rev the car to make it squeak) and it sounds like its the belt near the alternator (aux belt?)

Should i get this rush in?

Sounds like the AUX belt - nothing to worry about in the very short term but would fix it when you can

wd40???? correct me if im wrong but you dont want the belt to slip do you?? The reason you are getting the squeek is because it is slipping, you can buy spray that is anti slip?? I cant remember the name its like no slip or something, from any decent car shop, ive used it before and it stops it straight away.

I would canvas more opinions before you put wd40 on a belt, you might end up in a little more trouble.

well, you say this... and that is why i havent yet. i always use wd40 to lubricate things not stop them squeaking.

the aux belt is ok to spray onto right? a reasonable amount whilst the engine is running??

take the belt off and start it up and see if the noise goes. cold weather has prob made your aux belt go hard causing it to slip.

Wd 40 works fine, yes it makes it slip but it makes the squeak dissappear temporarily for diagnoses then the wd40 just dissappears again. It's a lot easier than taking the friggin belt off and it's very simple and easy to do. Just do it, have a bit of faith man, I've been fixin cars for flippin years. WD40 isn't a lubricant either, it's a penitrating fluid for releasing siezed bits and can be good for cleaning. It will do no damage what so ever to the belt or anything else. JUST DO IT.

I was wondering whether you had done anything yet?? if you had sorted the noise out?

FWIW I had a look at my wd4o can earlier and it says lubricate twice on the back as to things it can do!!

i havent had chance to yet... im going to do it later!

i know its not the right thing to do, but for now im using the wd40 to rule out the aux belt. if it is the aux belt then i will live with it for now and get it looked at after christmas.

The squeaking can be the Cambelt tensioners aswel so im told.. so thats the reason for wantign to rule the aux out...

WD40 does evaporate fairly quick though but it's flippin good stuff for a 101 uses. Don't uses it on women though. It can make the sqeakin worse lol.

Try putting plaijn water on the belt first, it should make it stop sqeaking and when it dries, the noise will come back.

Useful to prove that it is the aux belt.
