I think Comedy Si makes a moot point when he owned an Ibiza Cupra, then 'upgraded' to a Cupra R - which was identical bar the wheels to the regular punter

you don't need to chav up a car to make it the 'top model' (just that the competitors have done.

i don't understand your point. the difference between the ibiza cupra and cupra r was significant - new OZs, larger tyres, 180bhp engine, different exhaust..don't understand your point? i don't believe that is chav'd up, is it?

equally between the leon cupra and cupra r - are you saying the only difference between those two cars is some chav'd up exterior?

i'm becoming tired of folks falling into this marketing BS. The Renaultsport guys are exactly the same, trying to justify that the clio 197 is a better car than the competition because it's 'grown up'. what does that actually mean? in my opinion, many - not all - folks are trying to justify these cars because marketing is telling them that if they don't like it then they must be immature and some 12 year old boy. it's just marketing.

when did all this expresion come into play? i don't recall anyway complaining the escort cosworth looked 'chav'd up' in the 90s.....???????

ps - can anyone also explain to me what 'chav' means?

clearly, it doesn't fit with what i want from my car - and i'm someone who's b ought 5 SEATs from new. i would have thought on that basis i've a reasonable authority on which to comment.

heart on heart, i do believe the MAJORITY of folks having come from a lean 1 cupra r, and honestly loving the look of that car, are going to be turned on in the same way looking at leon 2. me, i'm very disappointed in it, which is a real shame, as the cars SEAT did get to producing where some machines for the money.

Maybe they've got it jsut right.

If you can afford to buy and insure the Cupra or FR you want the wolf in sheeps clothing.

If you are looking at the stylance but are trying to hang onto (or regain) your youth you want your sheep to in wolf's hoodie look at blatant as possible.

it's toned down version of the 'pimp my ride' saxos and corsa.

And yes my altea is a Reference sport

I guess as an ex LCR owner I guess I am an exception to the rule. Well if you count the other umpteen LCR owners on here who have jacked them in for the new Cupra.

Im looking forward to a car that will actually handle well out of the box. Which also has plenty of spec and good value for money.

If we're airing opinions, I think the Astra VXR is an over-rated bling monster that can't handle its power for toffee. But thats purely my opinion. Its great to be different though. :) All good banter.

Not sure what marketing bullshit you refer to, as I certainly don't remember SEAT saying anything about buy our wolf in sheeps clothing. Or buy are not so blinged up top spec Cupra. They have marketed it as it is, a good value, highly equiped, powerful sporty car for the masses.

regarding the Ibiza old and new shape-I do not honestly have a clue which version of Ibiza is coming down the road towards me.
They all look the same from the front to me. Unless you spot a bit of different grille or a little show of intercooler or slightly wider tyres, they all look the same.

The same can be said of the new Leon in my opinion. As posted before, this lack of exterior 'bling' can work as a marketing exercise for many people. Not everyone! (at the moment I am on the fence about the Mk11 Leon-its growing on me but I dont think it will ever turn me on like my old LCR even if it is more capable)

Blinged up, chaved up, spoilt, hairdressy, are all terms that turn up when trends dictate. I for one hated the wing on the Escort Cosworth and much preferred it without all those years ago, but previously I thought the Sierra Cosworth looked cool-Its horses for courses on this matter though I'm afraid to say.
For a complete insight/overview into the word 'chav' head along to the next DONNY show for an hour or so(thats all I lasted AND it cost £40 for 2 of us to go in:headhurt: ) or a fast-car show and just have a walk around. The complete explanation is right there for you to see.:ban:

I have been a hot hatch geek for 22 years (including a Leon Cupra brand new and a Leon Cupra R brand new) almost now and feel really disenchanted by the current crop of hot hatches.

Focus st-too lardy and restrictive seat height
Astra VXR too small cabin/restrictive headroom/seat height /too in your face
Honda Civic-Not enough power for me-too tall looking.
Seat Cupra-Awfull cabin(for me)restricted driving view-but growing on me
Volvo hatch-cracking looking car but a Volvo
BMW 130i-Just right for me but no LSD and too expensive at the mo.
Golf Gti-tempted but too common(does that say something though)
R32-Cracking car but a bit lardy for my liking
Mini cooper S-very good but too small for me.

Renault Meganesport 230 R26-very tempted without decals-The first proper drivers hot hatch to emerge to challenge the Golf for its all round ability and deft handling-with a tad of exclusivity-dubious build quality aside.

I do think SEAT have headed in a strange direction with the current similar shaped range. However, looking at the above list of cars, the Cupra is not a bad choice for what you actually get.
I also think Renault will bounce back with a new 'cup' clio and that will be a cracker, as will the final model in the Megane range before it changes in 2009. No I am not a previous Renault lover but for me they really do listen to what the enthusiast want and do something about it.
I honestly hope SEAT do the same at some point!

I think its very true that most people can not tell the difference between all the Leon mk2 models and the new Ibiza's. I myself like Fast Eddie can not tell the difference or even know what models are available of the new Ibiza. I believe its the same for the Leon mk2 and for the Leon mk1 for that matter. If your not into a certain car manufacturer you will know very little about them.

Until I saw a Leon mk2 in early 2006, Seat was not even on my radar.

all excellent points - i am with you just about 100% !!!!! we've had a string of renaultsports after the SEATs, but the clio now has bloated into something way wide of the mark. i'm not feeling the SEATs at all now - price no longer differntitates them, looks non-descrit accross the range i'm afriad, lack of agreession...jsut not for me.

which is why we went for the vxr astra. it can't compete with the renaultsports for handling, but it has got character, has the looks, we've no need for the back seats, and that engine really does mean it means business. and it can handle - like i say, not as good as the renaultsports, but then again, SEATs weren't first class for handling either

the rs r26 is a fine car - and we might even have one in addition to the vxr. still a shame they've lost their way on the clio right now tho...they will get it right, it'll jsut take a couple of years...

There is a good reason why the Aero kit is more extreme than the kit (or lack of) on FR and Cupra.

SEAT's job is to sell as many cars as possible. If they add a kit on thats too extreme it will i) push the price up- more parts, more manufacturing costs and ii) scare off some punters. By selling the Aero kit as a aftermarket part (or as a special edition add on), then they will get the die-hards that want something extreme, riced up....etc

You may not agree, personally with this, but research with other companies have shown this. I design bodykits all the time for cars (in a computer game). They are often more extreme than the Leon Aero Kit as thats what research has shown a gamer wants....Despite this, if I was still in the UK and had a new Leon, the one thing it wouldn't have is the Aero Kit!
