Rumbling noise when turning..... Bearing or driveshaft???

Hi all,
I've had my R for just over 2 months and in that time I've had a constant rumbling noise whenever I turn the wheel, doesn't matter which way the wheel is turned,although cornering and roundabouts are now getting annoying!!!!! Anyone with any ideas? I'm thinking either driveshaft/cv joint or wheel bearing, as I can't think of anything else it could be??

Hi mate. Is your car lowered? I have the same problem with mine and noticed the driveshaft is touching the ARB when turning because the wheel leans to one side. I dont know what to do about it except raise it a little bit lol but just curious if its because of the same reason. Sorry if not very helpful

Hi mate, yes it is lowered, didn't think about that tho lol! Actually makes sense as its when the wheels are turned either way.... Car is going for an mot tomorrow so I'll have a little nose whilst it's on the ramp and let you know, cheers for the reply

If its on the ramp you wont be able to see it actually touching (tried that already) because the suspension will extend and the wheels will be all the way down, well clear of the arb....unless you see any marks on the driveshaft - thats how i figured it out. I dont know if this can be solved with different drop links/arb.

What tyres you running? as if they're cheapy tyres they can be noisy when turning due to blocking up on the edges or just poor design (mine was until I fitted Continentals to replace the cheapy fullruns I got with the car).

I'm running yokos mate so not exactly cheap lol, might switch the tyres front to back and see if that makes a difference! Cheers!

Hyphon, in my case i can feel it and hear it as metal on metal and the driveshaft has a shaven line on it where it has been touching and the sound was horrible...at first i thought too it could be that. Im running bridgestone potenza re040

While this thread is started, i'll just take advantage and ask you guys....what do i have to change to prevent this from happening? if i lower the car too much the driveshaft is too close to the ARB and grinding when i turn or go over bumps....the noise sounds painful....is there another way except raising the car? It's not even that low, i can still twiddle my fingers between tyre and arch lol.

Hi, sorry i keep going on about this but i want to solve it, it's driving me mad.
Two of the cheapest solutions i've found (no budget at all atm) are to either get longer drop links for the standard ARB or take the ARB off completely like some people do with their golfs so they can go lower.
Has anyone tried/done this before?? Also what effect would it have on the handling especially cornering if i take the ARB off?

Right, car passed its mot which is a massive bonus.... Advised that the n/s cv boot is wearing thin, not split yet, so I'm wondering if the cv has dried out?? Causing the rumbling noise I can here? Off for 2 weeks next week so weather permitting I WILL find the problem lol

It's a rumbling more than anything mate, I don't think it sounds like anything is touching, and from what I could see when the car was up on the ramp I couldn't see any marks on the driveshafts..... So I'm pretty sure it's not the driveshafts touching anything that's causing my problem! Really starting to annoy me now tho lol!

With the wheel bearings, the rumbling generally stops if you turn as the pressure is put on the bearings (I think if you turn left then the drivers side would go quiet and right would quieten the passenger side ... unless both sides have buggered bearings!

In that case I may have 2 buggered bearings mate! The noise is only there when turning, like your driving over a rumble strip, will have chance to have a good nose next week weather permitting..... Cheers for the reply!

If it's bearings then the rumbling will be there when you go in a straight line. If it only rumbles when you turn then it doesn't sound like its your bearings.

That's what makes me think it's cv joint issues mate... As it only happens when the wheels turned???

Have you driven round in a circle with the full lock on? CV joints usually click iirc when they're on their way out.
I'd also agree with the bearing comment, might be them. They seem to be a common ish problem, had one of mine replaced recently as it went from a noise when turning to a noise all the time. The other side is now also on it's way out.
