Hi all,

Thought I'd open a project thread to keep track of my progress.

I bought this rare beast just before Christmas. She's a 2008 Altea Freetrack 4 2.0 TSi, basically an Altea XL with Quattro/4-motion type 4 wheel drive, beefed up suspension, a higher spec level and the 200bhp 2.0TFSi engine under the bonnet. The diesel models are relatively common but there are less than 70 of the petrol models in the UK.

She had 47000 miles with full history when bought and drove pretty well. Knowing how well these cars respond to mapping, I had her mapped at Big Fish Tuning (Highly recommended) in Stokesley (middlesbrough area) resulting in 250bhp and a shade under 300 lbs/ft of torque. To say the car is swift is possibly a bit understated. It's huge fun embarrassing repmobiles in my "Soccer Mom" car.

So far, I've given the car a good service consisting of the following

Gulf Formula GVX full synthetic 5W-30 oil VW504/507 Longlife service compliant,
Oil, Air and Pollen Filters,
NGK Platinum Spark Plugs,
Front and rear Bosch Aerotwin wiper blades,
and a good all round check over.

Looking on the forums, I read about the 2.0TFSi fuel pump cam follower issue where the surface coating rubs off and eventually the follower totally wears through and the cam gets damaged by the high pressure fuel pump rod. I bought a new cam follower from TPS for £30 and replaced it yesterday afternoon. At 48000 miles, the coating on the original item was worn but there was no scratches or damage to the follower itself and the camshaft lobe is as new:

After shelling out for a Haldex filter and filter tool that I didn't need, Petrol Freetracks don't have a Haldex filter, I got the back of the car off the ground to change the Haldex coupling oil which should be done every 40k miles. I didn't have a receipt for a Haldex oil change in the service history so decided to change it, it's £22 from TPS for a litre of the Haldex specific oil. The old stuff was pretty clean and there was zero metal deposits on either the drain plug or the base of the oil pan so it looks to be in good health:

Whilst driving, I've noticed a slight droning noise at 2000-2500 revs that I thought was the exhaust to start with. From some research, it turns out that its the flexible coupling at the rear of the propshaft where it attaches to the Haldex unit. VW/TPS want £280 for this part, a rubber disc with 6 holes and a metal balancer weight around the outside. No thank you. I've sourced an OEM Lemforder part for £130 which should arrive from Germany in the next few days.

As far as exterior mods go, I've fitted a couple of highly swanky SEAT Sport vinyl decals where the Copa badges are on the doors of our other Altea. That's going to be it. I do have thoughts on some engine mods though, I think a 500bhp 4WD Altea sleeper would be pretty entertaining :)

These certainly look better in black or dark colours as the bare plastics everywhere are better disguised.

Is it the same haldex system as other higher powered VAG group stuff..........I.e capable of handling much more power?

Yes, the Haldex coupling is exactly the same so plenty of power can be put through it. It's the later gen system that doesn't rely on front wheel slip before it sends drive to the rear. Under throttle, it's on full 50/50 4 wheel drive so no wheel hop or wheelspin at all.

I agree, they look better in darker colours. The plastics aren't bare, they just have a contrasting paint colour. Regardless, definitely better with less of a contrast. These cars don't look good in yellow or white :)

thats bloody cool, needs some cupra or fr wheels on it and wouldnt normally say it but some lower suspension maybe r32 suspension or something but perhaps that would lose the comfort then :(.
its only the second one ive known of and the other is owned by mork on here.
seems a little strange that it has headlight washers but no projectors on it.

either way bloody cool car in my eyes.
got any interior shots?

I've just bought a MK2 LCR and to be honest, if that had 4wd it would be an absolute weapon, so definately got traction envy!!

I dont think I've ever seen one of those about, but then again I dont really look out for them.

Its certainly different, and agree it needs some nicer wheels on it. Would look great lowered too.

Very tempted to take mine to Big Fish for a map.

heard some good things about that place scotto who used to be one here got his mk4 cupra mapped there and they seem to have some good abilities they are up there i would say with the usual crowd following mappers.

Yeah only thing for me is I don't really want to fork out the extra for having the dpf gutted.

Daniel,

Definitely go and see John at Big Fish in Stokesley. If you're a member on vagcars, he'll do your map for £200 and he's every bit as good as the big names with much wider experience for the most part.

Thanks for the suggestions on the wheels etc guys but my days of bigger wheels and suspension drops are over. I don't want to add unsprung weight in the form of bigger wheels as it'll negatively affect the handling, the ride and the drivetrain loss. The 17s are fine and have brand new Goodyear Vectors on them. The Freetrack is 40mm higher than the standard Altea XL but it suits me that way and the suspension is really well set up in standard form. Cheap coilovers will drop the height but totally ruin the handling and ride and I don't fancy shelling out £1200 on a KW setup that's lower but not noticeably better than the factory kit on the road.

I'm going to keep her pretty much standard in the looks department and concentrate on power and driveability, it's even more satisfying when blowing away the repmobiles.

Yeah I actually registered on there last night to ask him a few things. I know a few people have used him in the past and I haven't ever heard a bad word about his work. Late Xmas present to myself might be on the cards...:D

Am I the only one in the UK with a red (Emocion Red) Freetrack? I have always liked the contrast between the solid red of the main body and the grey of the bumpers and extended arches.

The darker-coloured Freetracks are difficult to spot unless parked near a standard XL, so the lighter metallic and solid variants stand out more as being different.

It's all about personal taste. One colour isn't any 'better' or 'worse' than another. Unless there's a penalty come trade-in time!! ;) That said, I've had my Freetrack about 5 years and have no intention of moving on.

Cheers, and happy motoring, Steve

There is actually a Haldex filter, that was my booboo. It's up on the side of the haldex unit at the driver's side and it sits flush with the outside of the box. The filter itself isn't a service item, it's only the oil that's supposed to be changed. I changed it with High Performance Haldex oil, the VAG one from TPS.

I've only had the car for just over a month but I check the oil every week and can't say I've noticed it using any oil. I serviced it just after I bought it and checked for leaks etc so any oil loss will be caused by either the PCV system or internal blow-by. From what I've read, the 2.0 TFSi can use a fair bit of oil and it's considered normal. I'll keep an eye on mine, but it definitely hasn't used any in the last month.

Continuing with routine maintenance, I changed the final drive oil today which is on a separate circuit from the haldex oil. I used Carlube fully synthetic 75W-90. This was the last of the vehicle's fluids which was yet to be renewed.

Whilst I was at it, I whacked my SCN stickers on. I bought internal ones in red. All the glass from the C pillar back is quite heavily tinted so you wouldn't really see them on the outside of the back windows. I think they look quite good here:

Also got round to giving the car a good interior and exterior clean. Interior plastics treated with Poorboys natural look anti u/v trim dressing:

Really enjoying the car. She pulls like a train and doesn't put a foot wrong. 4WD makes such a difference to the power delivery.

Looking good.... Properly good sleepers with the power aren't they?!

4WD in the snow/ice is a great change from the norm of snow driving.

Good work on the maintenance, my haldex is due a change in about 12k... and I might look into the rubber link if it's as cheap as £130
