Rocky's Readers Rides Reignited - 06/10/2010 welcome Cupra number 3

small update, the n249 bypass has now been done and before hand i wondered if it would be one of those things i wouldn't really notice. I have only driven the car for about an hour since but it does certainly feel smoother, it's hard to describe, smoother is the only word i can use really along with a crisper DV noise.

Also had a short shift put on, this was an absoloute steal of a price and when you get used to the new throws it is much better, especially when accelerating hard and needing a quick change ;)

Looking smart Tim. im sure when your mapped up the bypass will help better cause of the extra boost sensed.

when i get a side to side shifter i will mod that one for you. :D

Well it gutted at the min, just an update in here as i want to keep it fully up to date with all misfortunes as well as good bits.............so downside

I think my gearbox maybe shot!!!!!! I know thats a bit of a general statement but after some discussions in the Mk1 Leon section over a whining noise in 3rd gear either when easing off the gas or when dropping into 3rd when slowing, im led to believe this is one of the first signs of failure. I also have a clunk on the odd occasion which is definately coming from the transmission when selecting first from prone, therefore I'm now on the hunt for recommended gearbox specialists, if anyone can recommend a reconditioning company, feel free to comment. Obviously I wont just get one on a wim but i'm bracing for the worse case!

On a plus side my cars in P-Torque this weekend which needless to say is going to do a gearbox and clutch (which maybe slipping and gearbox related) a world of good if they are on the way out but least thats something to smile about :D

Any confirm thats what it is likely to be from experience????

The whining has been in my gear box since day one, I'v had this car since new.

the clunk doesn't sound good but wouldn't get the GB out till you now for sure its fecked

it's not really loud (that clunking noise), as i say occasionally when i select first and i'm moving into the gear i hear a quiet thud/clunk, as it does it only occasionally it''s hard to point out to someone but I'm hoping it doesn't get to the stage if i leave it , i break the box perminently. Don't know why it only does it in first either

these are the kind of problems i really do hate most

I'm not to bright on abreviations, take it you mean Dog Bone Mount.

If so, no i haven't but it is on the list to do, not at the forefront I admit but i'll bring it forward if it could help. If the whirring noise is something familiar to the gearbox then I can live with that but that clunk i'm sure isn't normal, no matter how quiet it is.

The car has only done just turned 44k miles but i've read about failures due to brass bolts instead of stainless steel ones being used and problems with the selector fork, I'm sure this applies to the 02M boxes more than the first issue.

Any comments welcome

Nice motor mate, best colour too.
Where have you run the second cold air feed from that i see in the picture, i have the P-Flo too and was looking at changing my air feed.
Also does you air filter rub of the bonnet lining?

thanks

rob

in response to the above cheers for the comment first of all, secondly i had to remove the second cold air feed, after it had been fitted I couldn't find first gear (or any gear) , after inspection it was catching the shortshift so I just have the one feed now, a second feed could be done but it would need lifting, then tieing it to the grill i.e. some time and effort. And no it doesn't rub, i've taken the insulation off for summer anyway but it didn't prior to this.

Second gearbox problem, or what i suspected, spoke to a mechanic and as soon as i mentioned the whirring noise, he said does it happen it 3rd mostly on over-run, which i said yes, he said he has known a lot of Golf's to do this and start doing it early and never have problems so don't worry, as per what you said Willie, but start to get concerned if that noise changes to a sound like your rubbing two bricks together when you change gear (gritty). He also said the mild clunk, which is really really mild and isn't really a clunk sounds like the gearbox engaging gear from neutral, i've had this since having the car and it hasn't caused an issue thus far so im going to leave it, the car drives fine so in this scenario im going to go with the saying if it aint broke don't fix it.

good stuff mate when i worked ay seat we always got them in with geabox wherring noises in 1st or 3rd on overrun it just how they are and like you said if it i broke dont fix it. As for your crunching gears id try and set the gearlinkage up the short shift may have but a bit of strain on the cables

Glad you dont need 2 spend out on a new or recon box mate. never noticed any noise in my box will have a listen 1 day.

Nearly MAP day hehe. should be good

I've got the INA gear linkages and wouldn't bother with this again TBH.
Nothing better than OEM in feel.

cheers for that Willie, nothing like advice from someone who has had dealings with the said item, stick with the OEM then. Going to book in for an engine oil change soon too so i'll get the gearbox oil checked again whilst there as this was changed two months ago, see if the level is still up and ok. See if I can fund the linkage change at that point :)

Well, yesterday I took the LCR on a trip down to P-Torque for a Stage 1 map. Intentions have always been to keep it fairly simple performance wise and personal I feel this much power is good enough for what i need.

Will at P-Torque started off with taking it for a spin himself and upon his return started with "something doesn't feel quite right, are you sure it hasn't been mapped!" When I bought it, I bought thinking it wasn't and I was never informed any different, Will's reading in to this came from some bad surging i.e to a much as 20psi but only holding at 10psi, he though it could be a bad map or possibly something else a bit more untowards!

This led to me having to make the decision get it looked at mechanically and come back or hope the map rectified the problem. Well the title now answers the choice I made!!!! Will has cleared a fault code which was showing EGT sensor - closed circuit which I will try and get another check on in a week to see if that comes back up put apart from that, nothing flagged up to what it could have been of the diagnostics, Will did in the end tweek something to do with the N75 saying this could be the problem due to some fairly odd'ish readings so at the min im boosting to 25ish psi max and holding i think between 20 and 22, therefore a bit more than the normal stage 1 I believe.

Anyway, couple of pics below including a graph, the two lighter coloured (if u can make that out) smoother lines obviously being post map figures for torque and bhp.

Pre: 231bhp 228lb/ft & Now: 271bhp and 311lb/ft
