because paint isnt smooth mate, its slightly rough, so when you polish it, you fill some of the gaps in, making it look all nice and glossy (to do with the way the light bounces off it or sumthin) and when you use a sealent, its like another layer ontop of the polish, to make it even more smooth, and i think its made up 'harder' so aswell as another 2 layers, it adds protection to the paint.

As far as Im aware anyway, I could of just said a complete load of b0llocks though...

And some, if not most sealants can be waxed over as well, to get an even deeper, longer lasting shine. I use car-lack 68 to polish which puts down an acrylic layer, then megs nxt wax over the top.

Cleaning Products

right. I got a decent chamois leather, some autoglym interiour shampoo spray, and some autoglym extra gloss protection sealent.

I was tempted to get a clay bar kit, they do there own, or a turtle wax 3 in 1 liquid clay bar kit.

I was more tempted by halfords own as apposed to the liquid clay stuff..
this is there own clay kit

Anyone used it?

Also tempted by this...meguiars clay kit

I got mine from Wilco......might as well get it from halfords tho because even if you buy that expensive kit in your above link it will work out quite cheap on the 3 for 2 deal :)

The one in your link is better deal to because you get 2 bars of clay, some cleaner wax, spray detailer and a towel where as on the quick clay kit you only get 1 bar and the detailer spray.

might get that at the end of the week aswell then...
meguiars clay kit, bucket and wash mitt lol

Gonna use the "2 bucket technique" to initially wash the car like. Im getting into all this detailing lark haha, It seemed daunting at first, just because of teh sheer amount of products on the market, all claiming to be the best cleaner. Lol

I can never be arsed to clay, unless its looking really bad, cause it can take a while!!

I tried the 2 bucket technique the other day, and i must say it does work pretty well. You do end up with one clean and one dirty bucket at the end. And i use microfibre towels to wash and dry these days, much easier than using a chamois.

Update 25/07/09

Well, spent a good 5 hours cleaning and clay-ing my car on Saturday.
Im pretty happy with the results, should make the final cleaning ready for Tatton Park that little bit easier.

It had a degreasing, then a shampoo and conditioner, clay bar, T-Cut some scratches out, 2 layers of wax, a sealent, then another layer of wax. I did my best.. but wish I could get all the swirls out, and scratches... and bloody stone chips! Oh and the dent..... :(

Looks great. I think may have applied a little to much wax there though. Problem with piling on lots of wax is that it doesn't do it any favours in terms of durability and can in some cases cause a strange yellow ting. Apply it thinly, wipe off...leave it for 24 hours then apply again. Should get much better results.
